Check out Coach Bartow's thoughts on the 3-pointer in 1987:

Bartow Wrote:I'm opposed to it. It's not good for the game. It hasn't helped at all. It's hard for me to justify rewarding a player three points for accomplishing the same thing a big man tries to do inside.
Bartow hated the three pointer....until Andy Kennedy came along in 1988.

Gene had some early experience with the 3 pointer before it became adopted sport-wide at the college level. The Sun Belt was one of the first conferences (The SoCon the 1st) to experiment with the 3-pt line in the early 80's. It was about a foot out from the current line. Entrepreneur Scott Simcik was probably UAB's first three point specialist:

UAB/Scott Simcik mention in SI -1983
Also I remembered the speculation that UAB would be matched up in the 1987 NCAA. Birmingham was hosting the first and second round and at that time, there was no rule against UAB being in the Birmingham regional. Based on the seeding expectation and location, it was almost universally expected that UAB and Alabama would play each other in the NCAA in Birmingham.

Instead, the Committee set up Alabama as the 2seed and UAB as the 11 seed (UAB had been the upset winner of the Sun Belt tournament). Both teams were in Birmingham, but would not meet up until the round of 16.

The likelihood of a matchup increased dramatically when Austin Peay upset 3 seed Illinois. Now UAB had to beat 7 seed Providence on their home court and Alabama had to beat 14 seed Austin Peay.

Unfortunately a relatively unknown coach named Rick Pitino, whose son had died earlier int he week, and a hot shooting point guard named Billy the Kid Donovan beat UAB by 22 on their home court. Donovan killed us from three point range and had 35 points in the win, killing the dream matchup of Alabama UAB.

The next season, Bartow accepted Andy Kennedy as a transfer from NCState, and when Kennedy began playing in 1988, UAB's offense involved the three point shot a lot more.
Providence also beat Alabama in the next game.

I was at a camp retreat at Cook Springs during the 2 rounds.
They went all the way to the Final Four and made Pitino a star coach
Bob Knight had the same comments the other day while he was an announcer for one of the games. He said something to the affect that he would still be asking for the 3 point shot to be done away with, while on his death bed.

Its pretty hard to imagine the game without the 3 now but i could see why it would have been a big deal when added.
All those mentions of "hot shooting" from 3 point range and scoring to win by 22 makes the 69 points "Pistol Pete" Maravich scored in a game without that 3 point shot (or "slam dunks") even more remarkable.

FIFY. I remember being at that game. Providence was the media darling, the Cinderella story, and there was no way we were going to be allowed to win that one.

All the Blazer fans were also rooting for Austin Peay that weekend because it was fun to yell, "Let's go Peay!"

Yep, I do. Of course I can't handle Dick Vatale or Jay Bilas either.
agree with you on this one
Some of the best basketball games I have seen on tv are the ones where I don't have a clue who the announcers are.

I may know them, but I don't realize that it is them calling the game.

It has been said that the best officiated games are the ones that no one knows the officials. The same is probably true of announcers.

YES!! I was watching some game the other day/night and he was yakking. Almost every comment he had was cutting down one or the other coach and the players on what he determined to be bad calls/plays, strageties. SHEESH.
It was probably the Alabama Drexel game, and those comments were deserved. Those teams were playing horrible down the stretch

Bob Knight knows the game better than anyone. I learn something anytime he calls a game because he teaches rather than comments or promotes like Vitale does. Unfortunately his age is catching up with him and it's obvious he is struggling.

Me. I hate listening to his commentary. He comes off as very angry and pissed off about everything. Kind of like how I imagine MB to be in real life.

I kid. I kid.
I love listening to Bob Knight.

Maybe because I grew up an Indiana basketball fan...but I think he has so much to offer in terms of commentary. Great stories and insight.

Also, I chuckle every time I see him on camera because of his hatred of the media. Whether it's irony or hypocrisy...it's hilarious.
