Apparently President Bush was paying attention!

Quote:Earlier this week, Rice coach David Bailiff joked he hadn't heard from anybody famous after winning the Conference USA West division title.

"I'd love to tell you I got this unbelievable email from former President Bush, but it just didn't happen," Bailiff said at his Monday press conference.

He then jokingly added, "President Bush, if you're watching, please email me."

Former Rice professor

As he himself has often told it: "I was an adjunct professor, until I realized that 'adjunct' means you don't get paid."

To be clear, the line is not original, and I don't think he ever claimed that it was.

Speaking of former Rice adjunct professors, it would be very cool if we could get Bun B to the stadium on Saturday.
Send him two free tickets! I like the President's sense of humor.
George HW always seemed like a good guy. It's nice that he referred to Rice as "our school", and appreciated that Bailiff is "such a good man for our school" in his voicemail.

It's hard to watch him move so slowly at Astros games, though. He's looked like not a well man for a few years.
I love it.
Maybe somebody IS paying attention to us and this game !
Barbara said (of my son on stage) "He's quite sexy, isn't he"

Ha, it wasn't said to me... but to a female, who replied... "quite."

GREAT family (The Bush's) regardless of politics.
A very classy man. A thought - while George H.W. might not be well enough to attend in person, the AD ought to contact George W Bush and encourage him to attend -- even though neither have ties to Rice that I know of - wouldn't that be a great photo op for Rice? If not so good for traffic! Jim Baker too...anyone know if the Mayor will be attending (a Rice grad no less)?
Speaking of politicians, you would think George P. Bush would be attendance to support his alma mater...would make a decent first stop on the campaign trail for Texas Railroad Commissioner.

First? He's been on the trail for a while now... even before it was clear exactly which office he was seeking.

(And it wouldn't surprise me if he were there).

Ha, that's much less awkward.

It was some world-class political acumen for the Bush dynasty to diversify into Latino. (Yes, I'm joking.) The Rice connections make me think more warmly of them than I would otherwise be inclined, as does the genial grandparerntliness of HW and Bar. My Jones friends tell me that George P was kind of a douchebag (I think he was '97; we were '99), but my Jones friends are a bit catty. And who among us wasn't a bit of a douchebag in college?

Mrs Tomball and I were fortunate enough to meet Pres. & Mrs. Bush at a Christmas party 19 years ago. They had a way of putting everyone at ease. And Barbara was a hoot. Her parting comment...I have to take him home. He's old!

That was my best moment of contact with someone famous. The second best was giving up my seat to Natalie Wood at a beach bar in Hawaii. What a naturally gorgeous woman!
I shook Barbara's hand when she was promoting her book at an event in the Shepherd School. I had just finished a surveying project* and I left dark blue chalk on her hands. Oops. 03-wink She was nice but she seemed tired.

*I will have to see if the civil engineering program still includes the surveying class.
I have a great story about The President and Barbara , George W. loved it when I told it to him.

Well?
In the mid-90s, during the days leading up to the spring final exams, I and a study group were leaving the RMC, only to see a bunch of secret service guys and what looked to be a familiar looking woman, who were all entering the RMC. My mind clicked and I realized it was Barbara Bush. She stopped and chatted with us, and about ten seconds into it, her husband came up and joined in the conversation. He asked if we had all been in the RMC for some jazz class, and we said no, we had been studying. The former president then said, "I'm sure your parents are all proud of you. I should write them a note to tell them you're all studying so hard." GHWB was known to be a prolific letter/card writer, so part of me has since wondered if he would have actually written those notes but-for his inability to get details of names and addresses due to his being pushed along by his security detail. I later found out the reason he was on campus in the first place was to speak at the annual Phi Beta Kappa induction dinner (a trivial affair whose existence no one bothered to tell me about!).

I have always liked George H.W. He has always come across as, at his core, a truly decent human being.
