Just heard the news. So, he's off the board.
Miami has great potential to be a MAC powerhouse.

Good hire.

He was one of NUPudge's choices.

He would have been one of mine but I kept forgetting him.
Perception (reality?) Miami-Ohio is a program where success can be attained quickly. EMU=coaching graveyard. I do not believe we ever had a chance to get Martin.
Dear Friends,
So much for he would never go to a MAC school, train of thought. Personally, right now, I think that Miami is more of a train wreck than Eastern, but they do have more of a winning tradition. Maybe he liked that "Cradle of Coaches" thing. Well time will tell.

Miami has tradition and facilities but we have better talent. (we have more talent than a 2 - 10 record would indicate).
I will go on record as saying that I'm a fan of the Tyrone Wheatley experiment idea...
I would have loved to see this guy here too though....
I would think that it would be easier to turn around Miami than EMU.

EMU has the disadvantage of playing in the West with programs like NIU & Toledo that are consistently upper echelon MAC programs. I don't see any East programs with the consistent pedigree of those programs.

Bingo. No one said he would never coach at a MAC school. Some of us just thought there's no way he'd coach here.
Bingo. Martins not dumb he wants to go somewhere he can win in 3-4 years and get the next big job. When was the last EMU coach to move up?

Martin turned down a Purdue interview last year, seeing it as a dead end.
Dear fbgab,
Purdue is no more of a dead end than Miami. You mentioned he will have three or four years to turn around Miami. Why could he not at Purdue with the same amount of time? When was the last Western coach to move up the ladder head coach wise? And how successful was he?
Oh gosh WMU has been a massive dead end. That has nothing to with Miami.

Miami is certainly not like Purdue. If he wins at Miami which is much easier to do than Purdue, he can move to a better gig than Purdue. If you go to Purdue given their future division set up it'll be tough to be much better than a 7 win team in a good year. You don't move up from there to a high end job. Purdue is a final job, therefore a dead end, and he clearly wants more. Miami allows for upward mobility with just an 8 win type of season for two or three years, and possibly to a job better than Purdue.
It is a good catch for the Redskins. I am surprised though. I would have thought that the Fighting Irish OC would make way more than a MAC school could pay. ND is a Catholic school and I believe Miami is private too, so I don't know if salaries are public.

Miami is not a private university.
Well salary isn't everything. Even ARod was willing to take a paycut to leave the Rangers (union voided the deal).

I bet Miami is easier to turn around than either Purdue or EMU. But I doubt Pudue is a deadend. For example, Nick Saban didn't win the Big10 or any big bowls and he 'moved up' to the SEC.
Last Purdue coach to move on to a high level BCS job is.....

After Alex Agase was fired as Purdue head coach he was hired in 1977 as... wait for it.... EMU AD!

Good point.
Is anyone else totally underwhelmed with Chuck Martin's vanilla offense at Notre Dame? Glad he chose Miami.

You do have a point. Yet, he seemed quite capable at GVSU and will probably do just fine in the MAC. ND plays a whole different caliber of talent than we see in the MAC.

That offense is Brian Kelly’s, not Martins. Martin just called the plays.
