Now that ODU is FBS and will be playing during this epic weekend (OSU-Michigan, Alabama-Auburn, VT-UVA, UGA-GT, etc.), should ODU link up with another university to battle it out every year? If that answer is yes, who would be an ideal candidate?

Of course Charlotte or JMU, provided the pukes went FBS, would be likely on the list, but now we know we're playing Appy home and home as well as having a good history with G. Southern. ECU has a new conference and I can't really figure out if Marshall is a rival that will continue after next year.
Madison would be the obvious choice, but for the sake of this poll I am assuming that JMU is about 10 years out from going FBS due to expenses that would be associated with an all sport SBC move, and no other apparent opportunities. The SBC is not going to accept a football only member.

ECU would be next IF they had stayed in our conference. We have a basketball history with them, and they are close. However, I think that unless we have an in-state candidate, the rival needs to be in our conference in order for enough exposure and commonality to allow the "heat" to develop.

Since the rival must be reasonably close, that kind of leaves UNCC and Marshall. We have more of a history with UNCC and that is indeed a great choice.
However, I feel that if things develop as I expect them to, ODU and Marshall will be the two football programs vying for the East championship for some time to come. Tough call between the two.

Agree with statement that it should be a conference rival.

Charlotte got my vote. Simply because there's already some built in heat due to the whole "game cancelling" drama. Hope is, if they can build up their football program, this game will be a great rivalry. Like to see it spill over to all sports and Charlotte become our new main rival.

Marshall is a close second for me. If Charlotte struggles to get their football program up to a certain level then it won't be much of a rivalry beating them each year. Marshall is right now what we want to be, playing in the CUSA championship game. So they would be my second choice as a top rival in all sports.

If JMU ever moves up, then yes that's a natural fit due to location and history. But I just don't see that happening anytime soon.

ECU would be nice but that could be years out from getting started due to scheduling issues.
Most good rivalry games are state vs state so uf vs fsu or uga vs gtech. So I'm gonna say next year will be marshall and for the future. I do think it should be uva in time.
JMU is not a rival. They've never beaten us.
Marshall will be our new rival and it looks like they will be a handful. Should be some great football in the future.
+1 on Marshall, they are the football version of VCU in terms of passion and upward trajectory. It would be nice to be considered their rival in the near future.
I like the idea of playing Ecu ooc every year.

Good team, great fan base, closest fbs team to us in distance.

UVA and va tech played every year despite not being in the acc together until recently, didn't hurt that rivalry.

Ecu is what we are currently striving to be.

Marshall would be second, charlotte a distant third.......jmu gets zero consideration since they aren't fbs and we won't be going to Harrisonburg.

You forgot the part about JMU not being able to beat ODU any time in the near future, too! 03-nutkick
If JMU was FBS, then they are the clear answer. For now, I guess Marshall or Charlotte.
If JMU went FBS then it would definitely be them. In-state seems to be the most often occurring rivalry.

However, I said Marshall because I think they will provide a tremendous challenge for our football program next year, and I believe that heat will carry over into future years!

Can't be JMU, they already have a heated rivalry game scheduled each year with St.Francis (PA).

As far as our likely rivalry game, it'll be a CUSA opponent with Charlotte or Marshall being the most obvious choices. I wouldn't mind either one.
Ok I'm going to this down by teams.

ECU- obvious choice, they are the closest and they are the reason we are in CUSA in the first place. Downside they are no longer in CUSA so that disqualifies them unfortunately.
JMU- former "rival", in state foe they make sense but are not FBS, disqualified.
Marshall- now the big dog, the CUSA East title goes through Huntington for the foreseeable future, eventually main rival but we aren't there yet.
Charlotte- new with no rivals yet in football, most likely considering Marshall will see themselves as better than us until we beat them annually.
App State- different conference with no history between us, disqualified.
Georgia Southern- different conference but with a history, I have no desire to play Southern in anything other then a bowl game and I really don't want that either.

Former = JMU
Current = Charlotte
Future = Marshall
Eventual = ECU (when the Big XII expands and a slot in the AAC opens up for us) 03-2thumbsup

What he said...
I'm not sure I understand why ECU being in a different conference disqualifies them. If we can schedule an annual game with them, its a no brainer. Is Clemson vs South Carolina a rivalry? UGA VS GA Tech? UF vs FSU?

ECU doesn't want to schedule us home and home and we are filling up our open dates with many of the teams they used to play.

As stated, a home and home with ECU will likely be impossible in the near term. Even if it could be done logistically, we are likely not yet considered to be worthy.
Without the above there can be no yearly "rivalry" game, nor the consistency needed for establishment of a rivalry.

An in-conference rivalry is not nearly so difficult to establish and the "heat" will be natural.

All of the above you mention are in-state rivals, and as such the "heat" is natural for the programs, fanbases, and even the public at large; whether the teams are in the same conference or not.
I think Marshall makes the most sense. I actually will be surprised if Marshall is not our rivalry weekend opponent next year when the C-USA schedule is announced.
