DAYTON — Clinton-Massie rallied from a two-score deficit through three quarters and knocked off top-ranked Kenton 21-20 Friday night in a Division IV state semifinal at Welcome Stadium.

Senior running back Bayle Wolf scored the game winner on a seven-yard run with 5:42 to play and the Falcons held on a fourth-down play a few minutes later.

“We were down two scores and we knew we had a couple (mistakes) and got held out of the end zone a couple times in the first half,” Wolf said. “We really just dug down deep and the line, it comes down to who wants it more. They dug down, there were some creases and I found them.”

The defending state champion Falcons will play Youngstown Cardinal Mooney (10-4) at 3 p.m. Friday at Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium for the Division IV state championship. Mooney beat Steubenville Friday in the other semifinal.

Kenton was ranked No. 1 in the final Associated Press Division IV state poll and Clinton-Massie was No. 5. It was the second straight year the Falcons beat the top-ranked team in the state in the Division IV semifinals. Clinton-Massie rallied past No. 1 Columbus Bishop Hartley 45-21 last year to reach the state final in 2012.

“Both teams just showed tremendous heart and I couldn’t be more proud of our kids,” Clinton-Massie coach Dan McSurley said. “Two different, contrasting styles. Tonight our style came out on top.”

Junior running back Chayse Wolf started the rally with an eight-yard touchdown run with 10:01 to play to cut the deficit to 20-14.

That score was set up by an interception by senior linebacker Dustin Sietz on a screen play Kenton had had success with all night.

“I felt him release me and I didn’t know where it was going,” Sietz said. “I just hoped for the best. That was a big momentum change. We were down two scores and it helped out a lot.”

Kenton had scored three touchdowns on a similar play, but the Wildcats went to the play one too many times.

“They were letting them go on the screens all night,” Bayle Wolf said. “All it took was one time for him to realize. He felt the screen, got lateral and right in the throwing lane. It was a heck of a play.”

Clinton-Massie then recovered an onside kick at the Kenton 48. Junior kicker Callum Jones's kick hit Kenton’s Conner Jones in the chest and bounced to a swarm of Falcons players.

Bayle Wolf followed that with his seven-yard run over right guard to win it.

Play of the game: Bayle Wolf and Seitz ended a possible go-ahead drive late in the game for Kenton with a sack on 4th and 10 from the Clinton-Massie 29 following the go-ahead score.

Bayle Wolf and Sietz met at senior quarterback Grant Sherman near the sideline to effectively end Kenton’s season.

“That was one of the blitzes we put in,” Bayle Wolf said. “We got a lot of pressure on that particular play throughout the game.”

Stars of the game: The Wolf brothers and Sietz were the key players. Bayle Wolf was held out of the end zone after for much of the game after scoring nine touchdowns the previous two weeks, but came through in the fourth quarter.

Chayse Wolf scored twice. He got Clinton-Massie got on the board first when he scored on the game’s opening drive from 56 yards out. Chayse Wolf took a pitch around the right side and sprinted down the sideline for a 7-0 lead 57 seconds into the game.

Bayle Wolf finished with 170 yards on 26 carries and Chayse Wolf added 119 yards on 15 carries.

View From the Sideline: “We had a game plan going in and we blew some opportunities to score and they stepped up,” McSurley said. “But our kids never flinched and that’s what I’m so proud about. We stuck to the game plan. Even down two scores, we didn’t change on thing we were doing and of course Bayle Wolf came up as an absolute beast. Our whole line just pretty much took over the game. We knew they were getting tired. We never panicked.”

Extra Points: Clinton-Massie has won nine straight and has outscored foes 366-83 in that span with three shutouts. No team has scored more than 21 points against the Falcons this season.
