Full Version: Tom Izzo's Approach to the New Foul Rule
You're currently viewing a stripped down version of our content. View the full version with proper formatting.
Michigan State knocked off previously unbeaten Oklahoma 87-76 in a recent game, but near the end, Oklahoma was within five with less than three minutes remaining.

Izzo said he told Keith Appling if he took a jump shot "he'd kill him." Izzo demanded his player attack the rim, which would be a virtual guarantee to draw a contact and a foul and thus the best option for MSU to put itself in position to win.

Izzo hates the new rule, by the way.
Thats how he should have reacted. Thats coaching.

dribble drive, best concept in basketball.
Every coach with decent guards has been saying that since the rule changes were announced. Izzo's just now getting around to figuring that out? I think not.

Of course he does. Mich St. was one of the worst offenders of hand-checking and body-checking in the country the last few years. Now they actually have to play basketball again.
JJ needs to do better at staying in control after contact...He should be shooting a ton of FTs...And he needs to erase the memory of all the charges he took early in his career and go back to his attacking mindset he had when got here.

JJ is shooting a HUGE amount of FTs right now.
It's not a new rule. It was just not enforced anywhere EXCEPT in CUSA. Now, it's being enforced everywhere. So basically, all of the other teams in the country can experience the touch fouls we've seen called in CUSA the past few years.

While I agree he shot a ton of FTs against Sienna...There is no excuse for him only shooting 2 against OSU. He has to get to the line with his speed.

He drove it against OSU but was trying to do too much. When 3-4 players are waiting for you, it's time to pass

And we haven't played Siena yet

Correct...Nichols...

Yep- I mean he only shot 15 in the last game.

23 for the year...made 20. But yes- at OK State he shot 2 (I know this is all anyone cares about when discussing the most hyper criticized player in our history).

For the most part- facts are irrelevant.

Can I get the final score on the Siena game? I need to call my bookie.
Nick King and Joe Jackson are going to shoot a buttload of FT's this year.

Nichols may get a lot too if we keep feeding the post.

I agree; he should have shot 35 free throws against Sienna and 15 against Oklahoma State. Joe settled for too many 3 point shots...zero of them actually and didn't try to drive the ball at all.
What was the final score of the Sienna game? I need to pay for grad school

It's not a new rule, they are just enforcing one that's been on the books since the beginning of time.
