UC Eyes Another Nippert Attendance Record

HOUSTON — The University of Cincinnati hopes for a Nippert Stadium record football crowd when the Bearcats play their showdown against Louisville on Thursday, Dec. 5 (ESPN).

UC (9-2, 6-1 American Athletic Conference) retains hopes to win or share the league title in its final regular season game. No. 21-ranked Louisville is 10-1 overall and tied with UC at 6-1 for second in the AAC behind Central Florida (6-0). Central Florida, 9-1 overall, has games remaining against South Florida and SMU.

UC athletic director Whit Babcock said after Saturday’s 24-17 win at Houston that the Bearcats have just under 1,000 tickets remaining for the Louisville game. UC hopes to surpass the Nippert record crowd of 36,007 set in the season-opening 42-7 win over Purdue, Babcock said.

“We’ve got the big one coming up against Louisville,” Babcock said. “Nippert will be rocking. It will be the last game in Nippert as we know it.”

Nippert will be closed in 2014 for renovation and an expansion from 35,000 seats to 40,000. UC will play home games at Paul Brown Stadium in 2014, then re-open Nippert in 2015.

“If we can make it safe, we’re going to try to beat our attendance record against Purdue,” Babcock said.

TOP 25?: Saturday’s win should again help UC on the national front. The Bearcats entered Saturday ranked No. 27 in the USA Today coaches’ poll, No. 29 in the BCS standings and tied for No. 30 in the Associated Press media poll.

“We should be in the Top 25 this week,” UC coach Tommy Tuberville said. “Then the winner of our (UC-Louisville) game would have an opportunity to play in the BCS.”

BOWL FORECASTS: Entering Saturday, various bowl prognosticators had UC projected in several bowls, with the most popular picks being the New Era Pinstripe (Dec. 28, Yankee Stadium), the Belk (Dec. 28, Charlotte) and the BBVA Compass (Jan. 4, Birmingham). Bowl pairings are scheduled to be announced Dec. 8.

UC officials believe the Belk Bowl is unlikely, given the Bearcats just played there last year (48-34 win over Duke). Some bowls prefer to not to have teams visit in back-to-back years. UC, for its part, enjoyed its Charlotte trip but also would prefer another destination this time.

MUNCHIE RETURNS: Injured UC senior quarterback Munchie Legaux made the Houston trip as a spectator. Legaux served as a game co-captain with defensive tackle Jordan Stepp.

It was Legaux’s first road trip since he suffered a season-ending knee injury at Illinois in September. Legaux is rehabbing his knee, and UC hopes he could return with a fifth year of eligibility next fall.

WHY BBVA: Saturday’s game was played in cold, rainy weather on a muddy grass field at BBVA Compass Stadium, a 22,000-seat soccer-specific facility home to Houston Dynamo (Major League Soccer). With the Dynamo out of town Saturday, Houston players voted to move the game from 70,000-seat Rice Stadium.

THE SERIES: UC cut Houston’s lead to 13-9 in the series between the schools. The teams had last met in their Conference USA days in 2002, a 47-14 Bearcats win in Cincinnati.
