This was on my hometown paper's site. I don't know how many responses, or whether it's at other sites as well (I suspect it is), or whether it combines those responses. But I was surprised:

How often do you go to the movies?
2%Once a month or more
15%Less than once a month
42%Once a year
41%Never

83% of respondents go to movies 1/year or less?

We went once this year and once last year...using free tickets both times.
the art house theater is a 10 minute walk from our place and the missus and i only make it maybe five times a year. and there's all kinds of crazy coupons and sh!t. they always have something you'll want to see and we need to make more of an effort in supporting good films and those that house them.
I loath the entire movie theater experience.

Over the last decade I have been to five museum IMAX films
and one dollar film (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)

My Mom would be pleasantly surprised to know that I
actually go to the Library more than the movie theater.

you been to an arthouse theater? almost douchebag free, unless you count us arthouse folk as douches. granted the selection is small (depending on the theater) and you wouldn't have heard of most or any of the films but check out the trailers prior and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I haven’t been to see an art film in decades, although I did find movies as an art
form more appealing than the gratuitous cookie-cutter pop films that hollywood puts out.

And I work in an industry chocked full with artsy douches... and at times can be one.
I used to LOVE going to the movies and probably went 9 or 10 times a year growing up. Now with the high prices for tickets and concessions I go maybe once or twice a year.

The NCG theatre near my house is relatively inexpensive at $9 for an adult of $6 if you go to a matinee which we usually do. We usually just wait for them to hit Netflix/HBO/XboxLive
I probably go around once a month on average. I saw Thor the other day, wanna see Catching Fire next week and also wanna see About Time. So this month I'll probably go 3 or 4 times. $9 matinee ticket seems pretty reasonable to me
About 2-3 times per year.

The usual reasons I tend to avoid them are...

- Chit-chatting, smartphones, etc.
- High prices
- The HDTVs now blow away TVs of the past
- OnDemand and other convenient services: allows me to pause for snack and pee breaks.

I know there are a few pros to theaters. Seeing hit comedies is sometimes fun if you have a whole crowd laughing. But I don't really have a burning desire to go to movie theaters.

If I don't make it out to see Gravity, Captain Phillips or Ender's Game (three flicks I'm really interested in seeing), I don't mind waiting until I watch them home.
I have seen one (ONE!) movie in a theater in the last 5 years ... and that was a RiffTrax live special event riffing of Plan 9 From Outer Space.

I probably average once a month. But at the prices they are getting to be I am only doing regular price for BIG HUGE BLOCKBUSTERS and anything else will be matinee. And even for the blockbusters I still try to angle for the matinee.

The prices are making me more selective about my price threshold for any particular movie and I NEVER buy concessions.
Probably average once a month. I love the theater experience. I can count on one hand the number of movies I went to in childhood, so I think that makes me appreciate it more.
Me and the fiancee go about once a month.
Last time I went to a movie in theaters was Les Mis with the family. Now, since I live in a town without a movie theater, the fiance and I DVR movies or watch them on Amazon Prime.
its ridiculous, its up to $12 for just a ticket not including anything else. to take a girl to the movies is more expensive than to just buy a damn DVD. that more than anything else the biggest reason why the industry is in trouble. although having every movie for free online (sometimes before they movie even hits the theaters) is a big killer as well
now i just go to these 2nd rate movie theaters that sell tickets for only 1-2 bucks. its the same movies only its much cheaper and i know my money is going to local business
