Last year we played Young Harris, a D2 school, in the opener. We'll play two non-D1s with Newberry College coming to town to prepare us for conference play.

It seems like a pretty bush-league thing to some, but the practice is gaining prevalence, as it's better for our RPI to schedule these teams than sub-300 cupcakes (which we also have our share of).

Just in the opening weekend, the following teams have played non-D1 games:

UAB
Eastern Michigan
Central Michigan
UMKC
Chattanooga
North Texas
Campbell
Fairleigh Dickinson
FAU
Howard
Kent St
Western Carolina
North Carolina A&T
Loyola Marymount
Colorado St
Elon
Furman
Georgia Southern
Charleston Southern
Liberty
ECU
North Dakota St
Austin Peay
Stephen F Austin
Samford
Utah
UCF
Northwestern St
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Southern Utah
UC Santa Barbara
Cal State Northridge
San Francisco
Santa Clara
Sacramento St
Georgia St
Bethune-Cookman
Wichita St
Bowling Green
Green Bay
Rice
ULL
Winthrop
Delaware St
Incarnate Word (yes--they're D1?!)
Chicago St
Long Beach St
Morehead St
Toledo
New Hampshire
Pepperdine
Evansville
UTEP
Idaho St
South Carolina St
Dartmouth
Stony Brook
Valparaiso
Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Maine
Wright State
Howard
Alcorn State
Eastern Washington
Jeepers! Perhaps Southern Miss was ahead of their time.
Non Div 1 teams have hotties too. Where they at?
Almost all of those teams are non elite conference teams who can't get home games because the elite conferences won't agree to play them on the road. They are forced to dip a division in order to fill out a home schedule. It's either that or live on the road like a SWAC team. Another reason why the NCAA is broke.

Excellent point.
Great point MB--particularly with the advent of the exclusive neutral site events like we have on Tuesday with Kentucky/Michigan St and Duke/Kansas. These teams will no longer play each other on the road. I'm sure we could've gotten NJIT, Houston Baptist, etc to come to Bartow, but it wouldn't be good for the RPI.

As far as I know, only UMKC lost to a non-D1 school.
