Frank Beamer took over a situation better than UAB and won five games his first two seasons. David Cutcliffe took over Duke and had four straight losing seasons. He won 3 games in his third and fourth year. Instead of dumping him they stuck with him and he took them to their first bowl game since 1995 and now has them in back to back bowl games for the first time in their history and they have been playing football for over 100 years (1895). The last time they won a bowl was in 1961 and didn't get back to a bowl after that until 1989. Chuck Knoll started with three losing seasons. By UAB fan standards all three of these coaches would have been fired and we would have to start over. I have no ideal if McGee can do the job but fixing UAB football is at least a four year project with our current handicaps. UAB is not participating on a level playing field in our conference when it comes to attracting talent. It was obvious that Callaway was not going to get the job done after his third year its not obvious McGee cant get it don't after less than two years.
McGee will get at least 5 years

Callaway's showed improvement in his 1st 3 years:
2007- 2-10
2008- 4-8
2009- 5-7

How is that worse than back to back 3-9's?

Fantastic, let me know when we hire David Cutliffe.

Otis Campbell ran a pretty good offense at Tennessee........won a NC with Tee Martin!
Big diff between Beamer/Cutcliffe & McGee - they had HC experience when they took over those programs so had an idea of how to do things. McGee's learning on the fly & not doing a very good job of it even if faced w/ an uphill battle. At least there showed some improvement in Callaway but if there's nothing better next year McGee might not be around but I'd say there will be staff changes this year. We lost a couple of coaches who had an idea of how to do things but those that replaced them haven't got it yet & don't have anyone who can teach them that so they're learning on the fly as well & not doing well either.

yes it is a 4 year project, however you at least need to be improving from year to year. This year we have gotten worse and have shown zero improvement from last year. Last years team is head over hills better than this years team.
I tend to agree--it appears that we have regressed some this year. The injury situation simply isn't helping us right now.

I believe McGee deserves 5 years, just like Callaway, unless he puts 2-3 wins on the board in 2014 and 2015. We show some improvement by winning our last 2 and finishing 4-8...that's the best momentum builder I can hope for right now.

One of the things that seems interesting to me is that McGee seems hellbent on building the program with his recruits, not the holdovers from the previous coaching staff. I'll be surprised next year if we don't have at least a QB controversy between one of McGee's recruits and Brown. Heck, it might be a controversy just between Briscoe and McKee.

I honestly believe McGee is an accurate identifier of the things that plague us. What I'm not sure about is whether he can take steps to fix it.

No ******* way. Three years tops and I would dump him in '14 as soon as a losing season is assured. UAB could pay less for a successful FCS coach and get better than what McGee is producing.

The buyout is $700,000 now, and $550,000 drops to AFTER Dec.4, 2014.
