Okay ECU guys, I know that you have the ECU logo in the shape of the state of North Carolina or something like that on your football field. Last Saturday I saw another school...I think NC State, doing the same thing. I said that they were copying ECU, but my wife said that UNC had that on their field a long time ago. So the question is, who had it first? I'm assuming some of you will know.

Your wife is wrong. ECU has had the logo on their field since 2009. NCSU stole it and put it on their field last week to try to mess with UNC. UNC has a state logo on their basketball court, but it does not have their mascot in it.
North Carolina has had the actual state of North Carolina on their basketball floor for a long time but that's a different concept than our football mid field logo we introduced in 2009. ECU's mid field logo originated from the Virginia/North Carolina/South Carolina jolly roger logo we have used on flags and t shirts. But they couldn't fit that on billboards.

Got it....so it must be UNC's basketball court that she was thinking of, although that's a bit different.

I talked about the logos before. Your wife is wrong. UNC has no logo in side the shape of NC and have it on their bb court, not football field, we have it on both. UNC's is an outline with little detail, ECU's shows the OuterBanks as Islands and the sounds behind them, UNC doesn't.

Here are logos,

UNC,

Just has the interlocking NC in the jump circle.

ECU's

Logo by itself,

NCSU's

Got it. Thanks.
Sooo UNC had the actual state first.
I get the whole "We had it on the football field first, they had it on the basketball court. So there's the difference". In the end, the first one to actually use a pic of the state in the middle of anything (football, basketball, field hockey, whatever) was UNC.
Corrct?

They had a silhouette, but their old one left off the OuterBanks altogather.

Yes, in NC, UNC was the first to use the shape. But, ECU was the first to combine the shape with a mascot logo.

Another point of fact, ECU was the first to copy right our logo, UNC didn't have their mid-court design copy righted and it is not used as an official logo by UNC, ECU does.

unc doesn't need to copyright a copy of the state in order to have people know that unc is in north carolina...ecu does...ecu could be in either of the two carolinas, thus the reason they needed the copyright. i love the football field logo...love the pirate, but if not for the state/pirate logo inside, i wouldn't know which of the carolina's ecu was in...

Ok here's the thing. There are 5 FBS (and I'm honestly not sure how many D1 basketball) programs in North Carolina. There are about to be 2 more FBS teams too. Every team in North Carolina has every right to use the state of North Carolina in some sort of logo. Yes UNC-Chapel Hill used the state first. That doesn't change the fact that ECU came up with their own idea for a logo using the state and that NCSU blatantly ripped it off.

THEIR OWN FANS SAID SO!

I understand some animosity towards ECU (hell I have some animosity towards a couple of ECU fans here right now) but any of you acting like we ripped off UNC or that NC State didn't rip us off are merely trolling. Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

If you truly think that this:

Compared to this:

Is the same as this:

I'll have some of whatever you are smoking. Out of ECU, NC State, and UNC it has been pretty much been unanimously stated that NC State ripped off ECU, while I have heard almost nothing from UNC fans since ECU started using the Pirate State of Mind logo.

Here are some quotes from NC State fans about the logo:

"so you don't think it matters that we have now ripped off ideas from Miss St, LSU, and ECU? you don't think its important to have a somewhat competent marketing dept, which we clearly don't?"

"[ECU] beat the hell out of UNC-CH. This is probably just trolling. We could do an awesome midfield logo that is ours."

"So you two are okay with us using a blatant ripoff of one of our in-state rivals' own mid-field logo?"

"It's not just this that upsets most fans. It's the Our State phrase that was ripped of Miss St, the logo from ECU, and the basketball video last year that was a taken from the LSU football video."

---------------------------------------------------------------------
"Does Nevada still use this?:

"No WE SUED them for COPYING us? Irony?"
----------------------------------------------------------------------

"We kinda come off as incapable of developing our own stuff."

"WE COPIED THE LOGO OF EC FREAKIN' U! FERCHRISTSAKES!!!!!

ECU!!!! they are in the same freakin' state!!!

someone wants to put that on a t-shirt...god bless them...but the middle of the football field?!!!"

I could keep going but I think you get the point. Anyone who wants to defend the Wolfpack and say they didn't copy us shouldn't bother, because they know they did.
Honestly this entire logo deal is just annoying....It is what it is, NC State can put what they would like on their field. Everyone knows where they got the idea to do what they did and they have a trend of taking good marketing ideas for other schools....So in the end it just makes them look silly but personally I am ready to drop this deal. Bitching about it is really a no win situation for ECU....Just makes us sound like a bunch whiners. NC State was embarrassed badly over this deal last week before the game by the media for putting the logo on their field and then embarrassed by UNC when they stomped all over it after kicking the packs ass.
TEP....you are on a roll...so true

USM knows all about likeness plagerism 03-wink
Even UNC's best player admits that NCSU copied ECU & they stomped on State's version of the logo after their victory just to add insult to injury.

- UNC tight end Eric Ebron told reporters of the NC State logo, “Beautiful. Looks just like ECU, don’t it?” It’s only right that Ebron shows some respect for the ECU logo—the Tar Heels lost at home to the Pirates earlier this season, 55-31.
Far as football goes, it may very well have been someone else to have done it first, but the first time I'd ever seen it was on East Carolina's football field. And it looks damn good.

How about this. We were the first to use a logo that bleed past a state border.

Or something like that. Maybe a graphics person has a better way to phrase it.
I know you guys used the pirate in the state first. What some where dancing around was who used the state as a logo first, period.
Everyone knows NC State stole your logo idea and it backfired on them. Personally I like the logo you have. Even if it is ECU. 03-wink

Where can you get that shirt? My brother is an alum, could be a good X-Mas gift.
I don't think its using the state shape/outline thing, its a composition thing... they took their wolf like we took our Jolly Roger and tried to make large and in charge inside the outline. Almost having the heads appear in the same spot, however NCSU did try to get more overall logo inside the boundaries. Basically theirs is a poor rip off of ours combine with not doing it right the first time because you still have those dark patches on the field around it.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I doubt they will, but I really really hope NC State keeps that logo on the field when ECU comes to Raleigh.
