That's pretty quick for a mid year hire.
He coached OSU for a year. Id say it would be a good hire.
Check out this guy....

Be careful though, he bites!
If I were FAU, I'd let the assistant finish out the year and see how he does. I liked what he had to say in the post game interview and the team played well against Tulane. No reason to rush to hire an outside guy if he can get the job done.

Not really. That was a lot of emotion. I would still go try and get the best guy possible. If he looks the part then maybe but they need to do their due dilligence.

Moments after announcing Pelini’s resignation last Wednesday, Chun said that he had many friends in the coaching profession from his time at Ohio State, and that he planned on aiming high with his hire.

“I am a firm believer that this job is a different job from when Carl took over,” Chun said. “Conference USA, the stadium is the host of a bowl game, we’re trying to fix a couple of things over at the Oxley [FAU’s football facility]. I know the caliber of candidate that this job will attract, so I’m excited about what the next chapter will be. At the end of the day, it’s on me to go find someone who can take this program to another step.”

For Chun, Fickell is aiming high. Fickell's 2013 salary at Ohio State is $600,000, roughly $100,000 more than Carl Pelini made as FAU’s head coach, though Chun said earlier this year he believed it would be possible for FAU to raise its coaches’ compensation after the season.

Exactly..
That'd be an awesome hire I think.
I think it'd be a perfect hire. He got a chance for a year, now has had 2 more years to review everything that happened that year(good and bad) and also got to work with a totally different type of head coach in Meyer from who he had before(Tressel).

I didn't say don't do due diligence, I just wouldn't rush to hire someone else immediately. I'd wait until the season had ended unless there is a reasonable chance that your preferred coach has a good chance of getting hired away before the year ends.

Kill it with fire!

Not the man himself of course, just the coaching career.
In 2010, Ohio State was 12-1 under Jim Tressell.

In 2011, Ohio State was 6-7 under Luke Fickell.

In 2012, Ohio State was 12-0 under Urban Meyer.

At no point in that timeframe did the talent on roster make a dramatic surge or drop.

are you kidding? They lost for one their starting QB. Other key players- remember 4 others were suspended for 5 games. It was a near impossible situation for Fickell. Plus, he's had 2 years to learn from that- even if he didn't have that -he would be one of the hottest assistant coaches probably this year across the country.

Poor them. They lost Terrelle Pryor, who had been wildly inconsistent throughout his career, for Braxton Miller. Even as a freshman, that's a wash.

As far as the suspended players, Ohio State always has players suspended. And they were all back in plenty of time to help them lose out their last 4 games they played.

Luke Fickell struck me as a nice guy. But he was in over his head. What was a "near-impossible" situation for Fickell was far from it for Urban Meyer. He would have had them in the BCS title game if OSU hadn't wasted their bowl eligibility on 2011.
almost any assistant in that situation would have been in over his head. For one, he had no spring practice to coach the entire team(remember, it happened on Memorial Day). So, he had like 4 weeks in August to get them ready... Also, for the suspensions- some weren't back until the very end of the year.

He's had 2 more years of experience now. Also- and I don't mean it as a slam at all- FAU isn't Ohio St.

I think given the OSU connection, it'd be shocking if Fickell isn't named.
I think it's smart for FAU to get ahead of the competition, instead of waiting until the end of the year.

Hope the interim HC gets a shot at remaining with the staff. Seems like a good dude.
Being on the border of tOSU territory and getting a lot of their coverage in the press, I would not hire him based on many stories about how he handled the team in 2011. Best cases scenario is you would be looking at 3 years OTJ training. You could do better picking up a proven FCS head coach.

On another note, we hired a tOSU DC and it set up back 5 years. I've heard his name kicked around for your opening also.

He might be on that new PowerPoint version so don't count him out.
I believe he would be an excellent hire. The sooner ya'll can get him the better. For recruiting purposes.
