Any useful observations? I see we won 88-59 but can or did we learn anything today about the team?
I was there. Score would have been more lopsided if we had defended against 3 pointers. KC took a ton of, and made, 3's which were almost all not contested.

Washington made two nice 3 pointers. Twice coach had both Klein and Richie on the floor. Don't think I saw that at all last year.

Starters were Shayne, Tava, Brown, Richie and Haymond.

Avery and Perry seemed to struggle when they were in.

Hard to tell how good the team really is given that the opponent was only Kalamazoo.
I thought Matasovic and McCormick were much more active on both O&D when on the floor than Avery.
I was quite impressed with Haymond & Washington.

Agreed that those were the two new players who stood out. Bishop Robinson only saw a couple of minutes,. but his athleticism was obvious. Hope he gets more floor time Monday.
Haymond is gonna be a stud.
I think McCormick will struggle with D1 speed. (hope his dad isn't reading this).

We look slightly fatter than Kalamazoo. Taller too.

We did see the delicious dish from Shayne in the lane. If he and Tava develop a sweet chemistry down low, it will help me forget about DP and his mom.
This was not a pretty game, style-wise, for the Broncos. Defense allowed way too many wide open 3 pt shoots. Our offense looks very perimeter oriented and not enough touches for Shayne.

Starting five was AR, DB, TH, CT and SW. 1st sub was Von Washington and in the 2nd half Jared Klein was the 1st sub.

Shayne looked in good form and was a man among boys
David was explosive and hit a couple 3's (2 of 7)
Connar does a lot of the dirty work and is tough. Not a lot of shots
Austin played steady but had a couple of turnovers
Tucker initially was quiet but came to life as the game progressed. Nice 3 pt shooter!
Von can hit the 3 and played some good defense. He is a slight build and not very tall
Jared hit some outside shoots but at time dribbles way too much
AJ rebounded really well (10 boards) but did not contribute much offensively
Kellen looks like a freshmen and has a lot of work to do. He is a lot bigger than last year
Mario seems to understand the offense and works hard on the boards. He is rather weak when trying to finish down low
Taylor is a solid defender but doesn't seem to have an identity on the offensive end
Charles Harris did play at the end and seemed rusty. He is very strong and looks like he could be a factor. Will depend on his knee
Hayden played OK. Missed his only shot
Bishop looked really good but did not play until the end. Nice 3 pt shot and has a nice build for a guard. Seems explosive as well. His mother told me before the game that he is going to Redshirt this season. He could develop into a good one!

Overall I was not very impressed but things are early and we have a lot of young guys who don't have a lot of experience.

Some key questions: Do we have enough play makers? Will our PG play be enough to help us win? Will we be able to get consistent production from the bench esp in the frontcourt? Will our defense to good enough? We will see!
We are only 6 deep. Big drop off after that. ( I think GBL said that after DB and SW the rest were pretty equal. Not true.) We must protect SW, because there is no back up. Guard play after AR, DB and JK isn't ready. That's why you saw those 3 in at the same time a few times today. Somehow this team must avoid foul trouble and fatigue. Lol, easier said than done, I know.
I see why Hawk is so worried about rebounding when SW isn't out there. I predict we finish third in the West, and maybe steal 1 win at home against the East.
Understand, these games mean less than an NFL preseason game. CMU was down 18 to Lake State, and had go OT to win. For the DI team it's simply an experiment to find combinations and such. For the K it's a chance to shock the world. Both coaches go at these games entirely different.
We get it that the games mean nothing and lots of experimenting goes on. I was just wondering what impressions people had of the kids, combinations, etc.

We'll find out what we have against the 7 ft, 5 in. big man of NMSU.

Thanks to those who gave their impressions.

Yes, there is a level of equity, as I wrote in that there are no difference makers beyond DB and SW.
Everyone else has this or that to contribute in various roles.

If you want to create another sub group you are likely correct that AR, CT, TH and Jared round out the next tier. Fine, still no difference makers.
This team may not be the 97-98 team or the 03-04 team, but they do have two potential stars and good group of role players. I am more worried about next season. For now, lets enjoy the show.
next couple years we will feel the early departures of players who would be upperclassmen and major contributors as the team will be relying on freshmen to fill holes.

Kalamazoo Christian or Kalamazoo Central?
Tonights feedback was depressing.

Tonight's game was depressing. Hopefully it was just a product of playing down to our competition.
The Monday game was super sloppy. Lots of turnovers. I'm worried about our ability to rebound big time too. It seems like we have Shane and a bunch of 3s. No real 4s.

I was surprised to see Von Washington as the first guy off the bench. He does seem to bring some quickness that the other guards might not have.

Overall I was not that impressed with the performance. I know these games are hard to get up for though. It will he interesting how the team develops this year. .500 at best seems to be the predicted record that sticks out in my head right now unless Shane and DB go off for 20-30 each every night
there has been a lot of talk about this player or that player being a difference maker.

IMO, when David Kool graduated, we have failed to truly land a difference maker.

The successful teams (NIT/NCAA teams) had 3 or 4 difference makers. Ben Reed, Levi Rost, Joe Reitz, Brian Snider, David Kool, Mike Williams, etc.

I realize the past is the past, but I hope we can start recruiting some real "difference makers" (and retain them) in the near future.

Granted, Whittington and Brown could prove to be difference makers...but they both graduate this year.

It is sad to be talking about next year, as this year has hardly started, but I fear for next year. Perhaps it will all work out, and my pessimism is silly.
You put in parenthesis a key point. We can't retain impact players. Four lost in as many years.
IMO Three of the younger Bronco players have strong potential to be difference makers.
Kellen, Tucker and Connor make a solid group to build around.

I am looking forward to the new NCAA rules this year allowing "players" to take the ball to the hoop easier. Lots less charging calls. Every college basketball fan should view the NCAA rule change video.
