I will recuse myself from any moderation of this thread and leave it to the capable hands of ODUalum and Cr8n. What I am about to say may hurt some feelings, and I do not want my position on this board to squelch either meaningful response or moderation by someone that has less personal feelings on the topic.

Dr Alex Trevino-

I do not come to ODU games to hear the band play. I enjoy the effort it takes to put forward a quality product, and even spent a little time in my high school band seemingly centuries ago. It is a nice additional benefit of coming to games, but not the purpose in amongst itself. That being said, I come to football games to root for our team and not to be a hinderance to their success.

Why, for the love of God, do you insist on playing during ODU offensive sets? It is stupid and potentially distracting to our team. I observed you blaring away during extra points, at the 4 minute mark in the first quarter, and during a critical drive in the 2nd half. Even muted, we hear you, and the team surely does as well. Why add any additional distraction to our team's offense, particularly in an opposing venue, when it is entirely under your control to stop it? What happens if your playing during an extra point results in a "false" or early snap that leads to a botched attempt? Worse yet, in a game where we are playing like crap, why do you insist in playing through our offensive series? It pisses me off, and strongly annoyed those around me today. It is not the first time you have done this, either.

We are not Norfolk State or any other MEAC school. We do not need to carry ourselves to their standard of priority of the band compared to the team, and I for one am extremely frustrated that your band cares more about being heard that smartly supporting the program that lead to your marching band's existence in the first place.

You have lost this fan until you cease from such activity.

Sincerely,
BP Smith
ahhahahhaha!
I'm right there with you. Me and the guys I was with kept shaking our heads every time they were playing during offense. I'm going to join you in sending out an email. Preach on!
I concur.
cr8n will have to handle this thread, as I posted this during the game:

I like to read stuff on here but sometimes I have to comment. Well....

The band supports the team harder than most fans. Bobbie Wilder has praised them multiple times and the players have showed their appreciation by running toward the band after every home game. So they play and they root. That's it.

To say that the band "distracts" the football team is plain horrible to even think that. If our team can be distracted from just a band then I am afraid our team will suffer from games with bigger crowds. So to say that the band can even hurt the success of this great football team is once again, horrible to think that. Especially with a silent count.

And Marching Bands across the country can be hated or love. Every Marching Band have had some controversy from playing at the wrong times or even been flagged.

Overall, fans will always pick someone to blame for a teams failures or struggles on everything but the team. I love what the band did and I love everything that is Monarch. I'll support and will always be a Fan that is anything Monarch.

Alex Trevino, Continue doing what you do. You haven't lost this fan at all.
I don't think the band actually hurt ODU's football team. I think the band should stop playing at inappropriate times. That is all.

The band should never play when their own offense is huddled and in the snap count. If players cannot hear, they make mistakes.
In fact, had we played during the offensive play of NSU, or they during ours, there likely would have been a penalty.

It is just not done.

But what about the countless times that the band HAVE done it. I understand the team struggled, but let's not point fingers at Alex Trevino and the band. But its not uncommon for people to blame the marching band. It happens more than most people know

Year 2 at Hampton we were very specifically told by the officials to stop playing while Hampton's offense was on the field. You aren't supposed to do it if you aren't a HBCU.
maybe the reason our defense can't tackle is because of the band!!!! Never thought about that.
I'd put this one in the "you're right, but who cares" category. Unless Wilder brings it up as a distraction, I doubt it's all that significant.
Since when do we huddle?
What a low blow to the Marching Monarchs. NSU put their heart into the game, and ODU clearly did not. You want to blame the band? Hilarious!
I didn't see anyone blame the band for anything specific.

Under NCCA rules (artificial noise or some such), a team's band's team can be hit with a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty if the band plays during an opposing teams offensive possession.
Officials usually warn the offending band first, via the game administrator or coach, that it will have to enforce that rule if they continue.
There is a reason for the rule.

You want to give your team every advantage, so while not a penalty, it (like organized cheers) is not appropriate to do anything that potentially could disrupt your own team.

I am not sure why anyone is defending the band in this case.
An experienced and educated fanbase knows that this just isn't done, period.
A little unknown rule an offical may give a tech of 15yrds if the band is playing during play.

While I think they do a great job at the right moments...we need to watch the wrong ones. Ill post an article explaining the no huddle o and the affect it has a bands.

The link as to how the hurry up huddle has made band directors more responsible.

Great post. 03-thumbsup
It's just dumb. It's a football game not a concert. You get your time at halftime. If the band causes any type of issue with our offense 1 time in 20 years, it's too much.

To be fair, this comes up after every game against Hampton (and NSU).
Debate aside. I thought our band represented well today during the appropriate times. To me, they definitely out performed "the best damn band in the land".
