Someone on the WV Scout board put this together. Thought it was interesting info:

Even though we all know these rankings can be skewed to certain schools that play a lot of sports (PAC 12 California schools), it is a good indication (especially when looking at the lower conferences) as to who is spending the money to play more sports and be competitive in those sports when looking at who deserves to move up to a P5 conference.

I find it interesting that most conferences have a school that is truly weighing down the rest....Pitt in the ACC, Washington St in the Pac 12, Rutgers in the B1G. Pitt and Rutgers have no excuse.

Common is that they are BE refugees. WVU at 48 is the highest of the recent BE refugees. SU in 50s, Pitt and RU in 100s. UConn is the best of the remaining at 57 with USF at 93 and Cincy and Temple in the 100s.

After a few years in the ACC and B1G, I expect their numbers to improve significantly.
Just as a point of reference Kent State in the MAC would have an average ranking of 76 the past 5 years which is better than many on the non-P5 list given here. There are probably other schools worth mentioning like that.
It looks like New Mexico and UNLV could be frontrunners to being the Pac 12's next invitees if they can't sway any P5 schools in. I'd expect them not to add a school from current states (eliminating schools like San Diego State) and BYU is still off limits. Boise State is impressive but you have to wonder why the Pac hasn't added them yet. In my opinion, if they were to add them it would have been years ago.

Notre Dame doesn't count. Forgot about Louisville. Still don't really think of them as a BE school.
After this year they won't be...

Neither UNLV nor Boise State spends enough on research to fit in with the Pac 12. The three MWC schools that do are Colorado State, Hawaii and New Mexico.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure so that clears things up. I'm not a West Coast guy so I don't know as much about them. All I know is the Pac cares about academics and prestige.

We will be up significantly over the next few years. We've always had a few decent non-revenue sports, but overall, our olympic sports are improving a lot over the last few years.

Field hockey ranked 17th
Fencing ranked 9th
Men's gymnastics ranked 12th
Volleyball is 15-5 and 6-2 in the AAC
Men's soccer is 9-3-3 and 2-1-3 in the AAC (4th place after Louisville, UCF, UConn)
Women's lacrosse is pretty good and beat USC at USC last year
Softball was 32-26 last year
Women's track came in 2nd place in the A10 last year
Men's track came in 3rd place in the A10 last year

Women's tennis is average.
Men's tennis is average.
Baseball still isn't good, but improved a little bit and beat VA Tech.
Women's soccer is the only sport we are bad at other than baseball.

Little ol' G5 UConn:

1) higher than 22% of the P5 schools in the Director's Cup,
2) higher than 40% of the P5 schools in athletic budget,
3) higher than 61% of the P5 schools in academics per U.S. News.
