It's almost like Oregon doesn't even have an identity anymore. I don't even remember what their school colors are any more.

But they do usually look good & the young recruits love this stuff as exemplified by Oregon's meteoric rise to the top since they started changing their uniforms so often (just an average program until the turn of the millennium with only one conference championship from '58-'99). Look how Baylor's recent success has coincided with an entire wardrobe upgrade.

Purists argue that it taints the program's heritage & can even hurt a school's ability to brand itself (Alabama is usually the program that this theory touts as it's crowning example).

The New Age embraces this ambiguity of unlimited combinations & the promotion of secondary colors and even non-school colors.

I tend to lean towards the new age unlimited uniform combinations theory because it energizes fan-bases, players, recruits, etc. & innovation is something I always encourage. I think it can even be a psychological advantage (ECU is 4-0 this season when they don unis with some black in the combo & only 1-2 when wearing traditional-only colors).

That being said, it is important to maintain tradition & there's certainly something to be said for having a recognizable logo/uniform that can span generations. & some of these schools just really need to hire a new designer (e.g.: UNC & Maryland).

Maybe I'm just tainted because I love ECU's Jolly Roger logo & the new black uniforms are intimidating & black just seems to fit the Pirate State of Mind perfectly! The black on black looks best to me (@ UNC we looked like gangsters running up in their house and taking their gold) but I like other combos as well.

Home and away. With maybe different color pants. I DESPISE alternate uniforms especially when teams like Notre Dame, Ohio State, etc do it.

Of course they have an identity, they're Nike U.
I realistically think that Home, Away, and Alt are all that is needed.

A retro reissue or a specialty anniversary/occasion one off isn't bad.

Personally speaking:

Panthers main uniforms are the Whites and the Blacks. However, I think our alt with the blue is the best looking one of the three.

The Hurricanes old Red and Whites weren't bad but for some reason I really liked the Alt Black jersey... colors..pattern... and the warning flag just looked more bad ass that the other two styles. When I caught a good sale I got that one first. I did recently buy our old red one because of a killer sale( I would have jumped on the old white too but took too long to make up my mind to pull the trigger). Of out new set, the new red is nice and classic but the white, while retro... just doesn't look as cool.

@ Oregon specifically

I like some of the style statements and I think some of their ideas work really well for them and possibly others...

But very few schools have an athletic apparel company as a donor to fund that kind of uniform depth. I think Maryland/Under Armor is about the only other one.

@ ECU specifically

I've never thought our uniforms were ugly sans the all purple ones...just TOO PLAIN.

I did like our change over to the Jolly Roger helmet.

I think that the black uniforms this year are great. The black helmet really seals the deal for them.

The fabled/infamous gold jerseys ( or highlighter yellow 03-razz ) could have had a huge impact as to why it took us so long to even thing about a 3rd/alt jersey.
It's 'Murica and we can do as we damn well please. If that means ten bejillun uniform jerzeys OK, if I can pay for it, or Nike can pay for it, as long as the students don't have to pay for it . ODU has several different options, like most CUSA schools, for me that seems like enough.
There are certain programs that I feel should NOT use alternate uniforms. Other than that, I don't mind alternate uni's as long as they are tasteful.
Oregon didn't have a strong uniform brand. This became theirs.

Trad schools like ND/PSU need to stay the same.

This. Who cares if Oregon wants to wear a new uniform every week? If it takes a certain color uniform for your team to play well, what does that say about their mental toughness?

You just explained why I don't do TV and selectively pick my shite on mr internets....one can only endure so much brainwashing...then you learn to throw out the trash.

Ya nailed it sir.
I personally do not like all these ridiculous uniforms, but to each their own.
I personally believe that uniforms that still have their template from the 60's are the best. Alabama, Auburn, Notre Dame, USC, Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska, Texas, A&M, UCLA, Washington, etc.

That being said, it does a program little good to stay with the same uniforms if their brand isn't one of those.

There are many ways to light a fire to a program and a notable change of brand is one of them.
I truly hate this development. If I turn on the TV and see a team dressed in black I don't want to have to go the program guide to find out it's Baylor.

You can look at the team names. Most channels now have the names, time, and score on the screen anytime the game is on.
I'd love to see Tulane break out a series of alternates with the new stadium. We're trying to rebrand the program anyway - like Maryland and Baylor - so why not?

Same difference if it is a predominantly white jersey.
Yeah, Tulane could certainly benefit from a brand change. Those pastel colors have been too "soft" for too long.

Some change is good. I hate USM's yellow helmets with a passion. I like practically every black helmet we've ever tried. I'll kill anyone who suggests a white helmet. Not a big fan of gold jerseys either. Prefer black or white.

Love ECU's usage of the skull and crossbones. Great stuff.

Some programs' uniform are part of their identity; Alabama, Penn State, and Michigan come to mind. But a lot of programs don't have that kind of identity. Change is good for them. Something snazzy might catch the right recruit's eye and make a difference. Oregon's constant uniform change IS their identity, but that's expensive, and good thing they have the CEO of Nike backing them.
Tulane's all whites are something we should go back to at some point in the future. I definitely think we needed "a change" this year, and so our new grey uniforms have helped in that regard.

But how can you not say this is a classic look, "soft" or not?

That's one of the best looks in college football, for my money. Fresh and clean bro!
I voted for stick with traditional, but I'm okay with an occasional alternate or throwback. But I still think those should feature the school colors. I think TCU is embarrassed that their primary school color is purple.
Ok all of you need to stop hating on my ducks lol!!
