We are reporting that Bryan Price will be named manager tomorrow. No comment from #Reds. Price did not return a message.

Meh
I like the move. Surprised they didn't look at some outside candidates, but the pitchers like and respect Price, he holds them accountable as well as some of them have ever experienced (I believe both Arroyo and Bailey have stated this), he will be able to hire a pitching coach with a similar philosophy while maintaining an oversight role, which should help the continuity of one of the strengths of this team, and he is supposedly really smart. I expect to see much better bullpen management and late game decisions. This is a relatively small part of the managers job, but it matters and should be more enjoyable to watch. If Chapman remains a closer, we shouldn't have to wait for exclusively save situations to watch him pitch, amongst other very frustrating decisions that were all too familiar.
On the day it comes out that Mattingly is not happy with the way he is being treated in LA...should have waited.
I hope he tells Chapman today that he is starting next season.

I believe there was already an assistant pitching coach, I'm sure he'll get the pitching coach job. If not when will Bronson be ready to coach?

Has Jacoby been fired yet?

x2

Not sure a mellow pitching coach with no experience is an upgrade over Baker. Feels like settling...got rid of Baker to appease paying customers and not to improve team.
IMO - seems like a capable guy. He has the respect and support of the players.

Potential is there.

It is too bad Jim Leyland is 68 and not 58 - to me he would have been the perfect fit.
Dusty Baker with a little more polish.

Speaking as a Tigers fan I'm curious how Leyland is significantly different than Baker?

It is a point well taken.

I suppose a WS ring for one and the fact that Leyland has done very well with underdog small market teams.

And it probably helps that I have watched Leyland from a distance and not closely as a fan of any of his teams.

I don't know if he is a LA kind of guy, but I do recall that he grew up in Evansville In. Wonder if the Reds thought about him?
03-zzz

Meh....not a fan of another "Players' coach".

He's an excellent players manager that does a good job maintaining control of the clubhouse. His in game moves will drive you completely insane, especially his bullpen usage.

I haven't followed Baker as closely as most Reds fans either but from the periphery it always amused me that most of the complaints from Reds fans sounded identical to the complaints from Tigers fans.
I don't know. Who knows maybe he ends up being a good manager. Thing is we don't know because there is no track record.

Reds get rid of baker to appease fans who want a change and may not buy as many tickets. So they hire a guy who was part of existing regime. They hire a guy who isn't going to excite the fan base.

And all the while eat Bakers $4MM when they can't afford Choo. Of course price will probably make about $3MM less than baker so I guess it really only costs the reds his salary.

I like Price. Think he has done a great job. But I'm not excited. I'm not ready to go buy tickets today. I'm not itching for spring training.

This just feels today like a big swing but only got a piece of it and dribbled it down the line to first.

I'm curious if this was the move what took so long? Who did they try to get that wasnt interested.

I hope they don't treat rest of offseason with this same weak response.
I like the hire, I just hope he brings in a strong bench coach (maybe Ron Oester?) to come in and shake things up. I know Oester was screwed over by Bowden/Lindner, but the Reds front office is completely different now.

I was hoping for Paul O'Neil...I just want someone with fire and attitude. I can live with Price but O'Neil would have been exciting to me.

O'Neil isn't even in coaching at any level, and never has been. If he wants to come on board as a hitting coach I'd be cool with it.

I thought that about O'Neil all along. Bring him on as a coach, he knows what it takes to win.
