On ESPNN?

I wanna know how beneficial playing at noon was, by the number of people watching the game.
According to John Ourand at the Sports Business Journal, the Toledo/Navy game drew 171,000 viewers.
Sounds worth it

I agree. Our 3 weeknight ESPN2 games last year were all around 550k. So a Saturday noon game on ESPNNews getting 171k isn't too bad. I'd rather have that than a weeknight game.

Sorry, I'd still rather have a 7:00 pm game with 25,000 in the Glass Bowl and no TV.
It would've been a chilly night but dry... A 7 pm kickoff might have had 24,000 + in attendance... IMO, A better trade off than 170,000 people watching online...

It was on TV (ESPNNews), not just online.
Why do all of you assume there would have been 24 or 25,000 at the game if it was played at 7 p.m.? The Navy attendance was more than Homecoming and just slightly under the opening game. Take the TV revenue when you can. The bad ratings will probably hurt UT's chances for a future Saturday game at noon, but it will have no impact on the share of ad revenue they will get from a nationally televised game that's already been played.

Yep, you are correct... Still preferred a night game along with ESPNews coverage...

TV revenue, and exposure is great, but if the Toledo community cannot muster up at least 24,000 butts in the seats for the Naval Academy on a mid October night maybe we'll have to be content to sell out to ESPN and expect more noon kickoffs w/ 18,000 at the GB...03-banghead

So 18,000 at noon is a lot worse than 20,000 at 7 p.m. (on a much warmer day) and 17,000 at 3 p.m.? Got it. Thanks.

Sie sind willkommen !!!

Point I'm trying to make is that Toledo should have been able to draw at least 24,000 for Navy ... 20,000 for an FCS school and 17,000 for an 0-6 Western team probably was to be expected, but switching time slots from 7 pm to noon killed attendance, especially with the weather being such a factor... 04-cheers
Well 21k on a mild night, and 0 tv viewers.
Or 18k on a cold rainy day, with 171k tv viewers...
You can't control the weather, though, and rain is going to kill attendance no matter what time the game is. I don't think changing a game time is a good idea. But, maybe they can project attendance trends and figure, what the heck, may as well take a chance and change the time to get some TV exposure.

I agree that for Navy we should be able to pull in a good crowd, even if it's a day game. But, the unusual home schedule and losing a key conference matchup early in the season really put a damper on the buzz IMO.
A win at Mizzo and BSU would have had the Glass Bowl Rocking for Navy, regardless of the weather.

I don't know if I'd consider that a "bad" rating. 1st off, it was on ESPNnews. 2nd, Maryland-Wake Forest (2 ACC schools) on ESPNU had 179k at the same exact time.
do we really get a cut of ad revenue? are you sure? the mac-espn deal has always been selling exposure for scheduling control. there's never been much revenue to it.

secondly, we are a public university and the games are first and foremost for the students, fans, alumni to attend. I appreciate being able to watch on tv when I am unable to be in Toledo at the game, but the priority should be on filling the stadium.

it's not coincidence that our two most exciting games and best performances last yr were the no tv home games (BG and Cincy).

I recall us playing pretty poorly against Cinci, at least on the offensive side of the ball. Their QB was so inept our D looked good. BG is BG and would be exciting TV or no. Western was easily our most impressive performance, IMO and CMU and Akron were also no TV home games if I'm reading the schedule correctly. They were both on ESPN3 as were Cinci and BG.
