Attendance is supposed to be record breaking with up to 160000 in attendance in 2016

From CBSSPORTS

Virginia Tech and Tennessee have found a perfect venue for their 2016 meeting. (USATSI)
Over the last few years we've seen college football games played in NFL palaces and even on baseball fields. Well, it seems the next football frontier are racetracks.

From CBSSports.com's own Bruce Feldman.

And, honestly, this idea is just awesome. As you can see in the photo above, the track is almost perfect for a football game and as Bruce mentions in his tweet, you can fit a whole lot of people in the place.

It's also a perfect location for another reason. Blackburg, Virginia and Knoxville, Tennessee are separated by about three and a half hours on Interstate 81. Just about halfway between them on the state border between Virginia and Tennessee just off Interstate 81?

You guessed it. Bristol Motor Speedway. It's just an absolute perfect location for this game.

This will be the first time the two schools have met since the 2009 Peach Bowl, and the ninth meeting ever. Of course the last meeting to take place during the regular season was in 1937, so it's been a while.

160,000 people to watch an ACC vs SEC regular season game! Yep, the ACC is doomed!03-lmfao
would like to see the plans on how they're setting up the field... interesting sh*t

Ditto. I suspect the best seat in the grandstands is still going to be 30 yards away from the field.

They could possibly use temp grandstands on the track since it's at a slope.
I'll believe it when I see it. This rumor comes up every few years when the Bristol owner needs to generate some news traffic for his Bristol race. Also, since the last time this rumor came up he has built buildings in the race interior that will have to be leveled to play football there. As a betting man, I say it doesn't happen.

I think and hope it will. I also hope you bash apart those darn orange things from Knoxville.
The city of Bristol is actually split along the state line so part of it is in Va and part in Tn. College Sports Nation's Coast To Coast show acted like this is a done deal.

I hope so. In the past, he's gone so far as to say each team had been guaranteed $20 million each for the game. But then it turned out he was just generating news hits for his race. Is the Bristol Race coming up?

This would be fantastic but I've gotten excited for it 3-4 times in the past and been disappointed.
I plan on being there supporting The Hokies in my Louisville gear. ACC fans will have to get used to Louisville fans supporting all the teams in the conference. We are very "SEC like" that way.

Both of this years have been run.
It's being reported by many outlets now and BMS has a press conference set up for Monday Oct. 14th. BMS owner Bruton Smith is remarkably silent. Which is odd because he was talking to as many reporters and pushing the idea as much as he could the other 3 times he brought this up. Maybe he's realizing that to get this done he has to wait until all the details are worked out before he can start shooting his mouth off. After all he promised $20 million a school last time and didn't get it done.

Bristol, Tennessee and Bristol, Virginia are actually two separate (twin) cities, each with it own government and each established under the laws of its respective state (e.g. all cities in the state of Virginia are "Independent" of their surrounding counties). Each Bristol has its own City Hall, and I image each has its own separate school system, library system, sanitation department, police and fire departments, etc.

I visited Bristol, VA/TN many years ago and was struck by the fact that the state line runs smack down the center of the main street (State Street) with a huge neon sign arching over it with one arrow and the abbreviated word "TENN" pointing to one side of the street and another arrow with "VA" pointing to the other side! I doubt if there is anything quite like it elsewhere in the country.

Actually there are quite a few examples.I forget the town but it borders Tenn and GA. On the GA side it's a dry Co and a bar sits right on the border. The actual bar sits in Tenn while the rest rooms are in GA. I could have the example backyards. I saw this on "How the States Got Their Shapes" on the History Channel. Another interesting example is the US/Canada border splitting a town in half up in Maine.

You should have more self respect than to say such things about yourself.

18 wheeler is about 75 feet long tip to tail. Using that as a size gauge, the teams on the sideline would be where the pit crews are. The field length would take up all but the outer 2-3 pit crews on each side.

It fits better than I thought it would. Unless you put seats on the track though, MAN it's a ways off the field though. The lowest grandstand would be about 30 yards back and then a ways up too.

Damn, they're going to run a race at the same time of the game......05-stirthepot Now that would be a sight to see.....both going on at same time.

Anyways, this would be a great event/venue and 2 teams that should be playing every single year somewhere in the region, given their vicinity to each other. I've been to Bristol multiple times and it very much is in the heartland of both of these teams. I hope it actually goes off this time and continues somewhere every year.
