Wonder how that's going to work for the Rebounders that have a special pass to sit in a reserved section lower level ? We normally pick the pass up in the lobby as we enter.
I would assume that your VIP section would be roped off.

So I guess we need a ticket and a pass.
Ummm...might be a good idea for the AOB to start publicizing that.

Nothing on gtg.com yet.

I like the concept, not a fan of the haste in which it will be executed.
A week before the event is "in haste"?

And yes, missj that would be my assumption.

To some extent yes, in that for that past howmanyever years, it is common knowledge that it is a walkup event.

The PR folks should recognize that they basically have to undo years of a common practice to install a new method. The folks have known for months when "Madness" would take place, so why just now try change the program?

Here's what will happen:

A small but responsible number of people will actualy go out of there way to find an Ashley Furniture (at Perimeter Mall, Hickory Hill or Rigdeway Loop).

The rest (who actually know that one has to get a ticket) will show up at the FEF the day of, along with all those (who don't know to get a ticket) to go to Madness. Madness will ensue when (invariably) people try to enter the arena without a ticket, and then raise hell because they are required to exit, get a ticket and re-enter.

Perhaps, the AOB will just have a bunch of interns handing out tickets to the folks in line, which will just annoy the folks who went out of their way to go to Ashley to get the stupid ticket they could have gotten in line.

Whether justified or not, people look for reasons to feel slighted. If, for some reason this event is a sell out (like JT making an appearance..shhh...) then the people who didn't get a ticket beforehand will raise holy hell and invariably come back with the "we've never had to do this before.." and "no one told me..."

Personally, IDGAF, it's no sweat off my back. I just see the potential backlash from some this may lead to.

Ashley's in Southaven had their employees wearing Memphis Madness T Shirts this past Sunday.

That's nice for those who live in the Shaven, but it's annoying for me, living in mid Memphis, to have to go out east or out of the state to get a ticket for a free event. At least UKy lets you get a ticket through ticketmaster (for a $1.25 convenience fee). I'd be happy to do that.

The realy beauty is if it actually becomes a sold out event, there will be scalpers selling tickets for an otherwise free event.
I wonder if 1 person can pick up numerous tickets ?

If so, that could be a cluster.

Bigger problem is no one knows the answers to any of this and many just found out a few hours ago.
Edit...

MEMPHIS, Tenn. –The countdown clock for 2013 Memphis Madness, presented by Ashley Furniture HomeStore, is just a little over a week away, and excitement is rising for the annual Tigers basketball preseason celebration at FedExForum, which is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 18. It was announced last week that Memphis is one of nine schools featured on ESPNU’s coverage of college basketball’s preseason celebration tip-off that night.

As a result of the capacity crowds at the last four events and FedExForum’s maximum occupancy issues, this year’s Memphis Madness is a ticketed event. Each fan attending Memphis Madness is required to have a ticket to enter FedExForum. The tickets are free and can be picked up at any four Memphis-area Ashley Furniture HomeStore locations starting Friday, Oct. 11 and running through Wednesday, Oct. 16. Those picking up tickets at Ashley Furniture HomeStore locations are limited to four per person or a total of 8 per household.

Tickets also can be picked up at FedExForum’s box office Thursday and Friday, Oct. 17-18.

Doors for Memphis Madness open at 6:30 p.m. (CT), with the on-the-court program to start around 7:30 p.m. (CT). The festivities begin at 4:30 p.m. (CT) with entertainment from the Tigers cheerleader and pom squads, the Mighty Sound of the South and a live DJ on FedExForum’s outdoor plaza.

Autograph vouchers will be given to the first 1,000 fans entering the arena that night, and the men’s squad will sign autographs from approximately 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. (CT).

An abbreviated schedule of events for Memphis Madness will be released later this week.
It continues to amaze me that anyone would actually show up for this to just watch the players play a game of horse. Basically it's now just a means to bring your 10 year old son down to get an autograph. The 1000 autograph "vouchers" puts pants on this fact. I think they'll be lucky to get even 1000 to show up. After last year, my tv isn't even going on. Well, that's a stretch. I'll turn it on just because I can't believe this is still even getting any coverage on tv. But for no other reason.

Easy...its called Sponsorship $$$$ from Ashleys.

UM didn't decide out of the blue and without any $$$ that all tickets would be only available first at Ashley Furniture stores.

Its a win-win for both UM and Ashley...as odds are Ashley will increase their foot traffic in their stores next week.
There is no Ashley's near me, and now I have to find a parking spot downtown just to go get my tickets in advance? This is HORRIBLE.
Assigned seats or general admission?
This seems pretty straightforward and not nearly as complicated as you guys are making it. If you want to guarantee yourself a ticket go to Ashley's from Friday to Wednesday.

If you'd rather wait, just show up Friday at the Forum box office on the day of Madness and instead of recreating the running of the bulls in Pamplona when the doors open, go get a ticket at the box office and walk in.

I imagine not only is there a sponsorship issue involved but the need to do this in a more orderly fashion instead of people crushing each other and fist fighting over seats. I bet most people will pick up their tickets Friday as they arrive

Assuming everyone is standing and waiting (with ticket in hand) how does this change?

Seats are still gen admission, yes?

Lines will still be long before the doors open at 4:30, yes?

So folks will still rush in to get seats and squabble about how many they can "hold" for their latecomer bretheren.

The only thing is seems to do is:

a) make people who live outside the city core travel to a furniture store in the burbs to get a ticket for an event downtown.

b) basically prevent "those" people who are mentioned in other threads from getting guaranteed tix to the game.
