HOUSTON BOWL LOOKS AT SURVIVAL OPTIONS
By Joseph Duarte, Houston Chronicle, April 27, 2006

"Houston Bowl officials will huddle with conference leaders today in Orlando, Fla., to discuss the long-term viability of the financially strapped game."

"The bowl still owes a portion of the $1.2 million payouts to the Big 12 and Mountain West conferences for participating in last year's game and is searching for its third title sponsor in seven years."

"A decision on the Houston Bowl is not expected to be made during the three day meetings, effectively giving bowl officials an extension to continue talks with the game's sponsors."

"Last December, the Houston Bowl reached a four year agreement with the Big East, Conference USA, and Notre Dame to pair a team against the Big 12. The deal runs through 2009."

"We're still working with the NCAA and conferences to find an arrangement that continues the game and ensures there's an opportunity for success in the future, Houston Bowl executive director Shawn Bouley said."

"Bouley would not go into details on what will be discussed at today's gathering. But the possibilities the Houston Bowl may consider involving the restructuring of its current bowl partner agreement or asking participating conferences to taking a smaller payout."[/url]
When the Houston Bowl BE/CUSA arrangement was announced with the opportunity for CUSA to have "multiple" appearances in the Houston Bowl, everyone was thinking of CUSA replacing a BE team that would not travel well. That may not be the case. I did the numbers and, if Big 12 has two teams in two BCS bowls, the Big 12 is not likely to have an elgible team for the Houston Bowl. It is likely that there will be more BE VS CUSA matchups in the Houston Bowl than there will be Big 12 vs BE matchups.

The same applies for the Independence Bowl and the SEC. If the SEC has two bowl teams for two BCS bowls, the SEC likely will not have a #8 team that it is supposed to provide the Independence Bowl. I expect, once again, the Independence Bowl for most years just might end up being CUSA vs Big 12 #7. That is why the Independence Bowl has a contingency agreement with CUSA similar to the Motor City Bowl's contingency agreement with BE.
That was very smart thinking on the part of the Houston Bowl and the Independence Bowl organizers. Now the Houston Bowl just has to find a way to come up with enough money to stay in business.

Now for an interesting sidenote. If the Big 12 gets two BCS teams, and is replaced in the Houston Bowl by CUSA #5 or CUSA #6 against Big East #2 or Big East #3, it could be a long game for someone.
Houston is probably hoping UofL slips to the game so they can get another chance to hold the Cards to less than 65 points or so, something they couldn't do the last few times we played them. 05-stirthepot
we'll be glad to take on the Cards this year College, Tee it up.
The Houston bowl, most years will be a CUSA VS BE so we might get that opportunity.
If Louisville slips to the Houston Bowl it will be a crime of massive proportions, and the entire football world should scream in agony. 03-hissyfit
If we slipped all the way down to Houston, it would be because of a very dissapointing season, not because we were 2nd in the league or anything.
You'll be lucky to be ranked higher that us this year college, the worm is fixing to turn.
Besides , my guess is that if we do not go to a BCS bowl or the Liberty we'll end up in Houston .

I don't see any disappointment coming unless Brohm and Bush are lost for the season before it starts.

Your comment about CUSA fans being reasonable people is debatable at best....(bambu, and a couple others aside)
