I went 7/10 in Week 5 app let me down and Tulane whipped SBC butt well here goes this humble mountaineer's predictions for week 6

Future Sun Belt

Saturday 2:00 PM
Appalachian State University Mountaineers
Vs
The Citadel Bulldogs: App win. App let me down last week, but CSU was 4-0 so it wasn't crazy shocking... Citadel is as sub par as ever, app would really disappoint with a loss here.

Saturday 3:00 PM
Georgia Southern University Eagles
Vs
Samford University Bulldogs: Geo Sou win. Geo was beaten by Wofford just the other week but losing to Wofford isn't shocking, Samford has had a good season but Geo Sou is better IMO if both are having a good year.

Saturday 5:00 PM
University of Idaho Vandals
Vs
#23 Fresno State University Bulldogs: Fresno State win. Glad the Vandals stopped being winless but it will be a return to the losses this week.

Saturday 7:00 PM
New Mexico State University Aggies
Vs
University of New Mexico Lobos: UNM win. At this point I don't have faith in NMSU winning a single game UNM isn't pretty either but NMSU makes my eyes bleed

Current Sun Belt

Thursday 7:30 PM ESPNU
Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers
Vs
University of Louisiana- Monroe Warhawks: ULM win. I like WKU but their loss to USA tells me they may be figured out by other SBC schools this year, really a toss up IMO but I definitely lean ULM

ESPN3 Saturday 12:21 PM
Georgia State University Panthers
Vs
University of Alabama Crimson Tide: Alabama win. No need for explanation

1:00 PM ESPN3
University of South Alabama
Vs
Troy University Trojans: Toss Up. This one is hard but I've gotta lean Troy, being that it's their home game and both teams seem to be very closely matched the 12th man is not to be underestimated

ESPN3 7:00 PM
Texas State University Bobcats
Vs
University of Louisiana- Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns: Texas State win. Texas State is having a great year and ULL is underperforming to a good extent, last weeks win for TXSTATE against Wyoming sealed my prediction here.

I expect ASU to trounce Bye this weekend. 75-40.

If Georgia Southern beats Samford, the transitive property of college football means they are better than Georgia State...Right?

stAte gave up a lot of points to that bye, need to work on that... I don't want to be a ******* but all teams IMHO are better then Georgia State until you get real low in the FCS rankings

Better watch that Bye. They must be wildly experienced because see them on just about everyone's schedules.

Have respect for you Check Yosef, but if you say:
"The Citadel Bulldogs: App win. App let me down last week, but CSU was 4-0 so it wasn't crazy shocking... Citadel is as sub par as ever, app would really disappoint with a loss here."

Was The Citadel sub par when:

  1. They went into ODU @ two weeks ago and only lost because they failed to convert a two point conversion at the end of the game.
  2. Beat Georgia Southern last year.
  3. Beat some team near and dear to both of us last year like a drum.
  4. Has a QB that can look like the 2nd coming of Armanti Edwards.
  5. Consistently for years seems to have better Strength and Conditioning than most teams late in their games.
  6. Knows it may be the last game between us for a long time.
  7. Needs a statement game for the year.

What got me was the acceptance of the Charleston Southern loss as more understandable or acceptable than losing to the Citadel. And then I was like.... 07-coffee3 But I guess they did beat the Citadel so maybe he is right?
Guess we will see how for real they are on Saturday when they play Colorado.

Good point.
However Colorado plays #2 Oregon Saturday.
Colorado plays Charleston Southern on October 19th.

My bad - I see that now - Stupid internet search... 03-lmfao

Anyway, it has been such a strange year. I'm having a hard time telling if both of us (Eagles and Mountaineers) are struggling against teams that are actually good or if we are just off this year.

I mean - App starts by dropping one to Montana which is understandable. But then they lose two games that before the season started, most would have considered "give me" games.
BUT - those two teams are undefeated!
Is NC A&T that good? The outcome of (I think this week's game) between SC State and them will be oddly interesting to me.

And what about Charleston Southern? They have two wins over SoCon schools now. 4-0. Something that ties in and makes this team more interesting this year is that they not only have CUSA's Charlotte on the Schedule - the also play Gardner Webb.

That brings us to Southern: We win our two give me games, but look a bit sloppy doing it. Then we drop a game to Wofford - that happens, Wofford is a power at this level. But then Wofford goes and losses to Gardner Webb 0-3 after hanging 30 on us? So, you look up Gardner Webb and see that they are 3-1 with wins over Furman, Richmond! and Wofford. Only loss was to Marshall - although it was BAD 0-55. The Gardner Webb v/s Charleston Southern game on Nov 16th then also becomes oddly interesting.

Strange year, I know the regular SunBelt members are probably bored to death by all these FCS teams mentioned, but they play some of the FBS start ups and those outcomes are at least interesting when you compare them to their games with Southern and App.

Things are a little strange in "the 'Boro" right now and even stranger "up dem yonder hills" in Boone. But are they as strange as the appear to be right now?
I'd have to pick WKU over ULM at this point. Losing Browning will hurt ULM and WKU will take advantage like when Navy's QB got hurt.
Here is my take:

Appalachian at Citadel. I am not sure what is going on with Appalachian right now. I do know playing Citadel in Charleston is not an easy thing. I have been very surprised to see App. losing at home to N.C. A&T and Char. Southern so I am going to go with Citadel in this one in a close game: 24-21

Georgia Southern at Samford. We might have enough running backs to play the game. Injuries have been an epidemic rate this year so far for us. Samford is a real threat to win the SoCon this year, particularly if they win Saturday. I do think we have better athletes, but Samford has been very good on offense this year. It would not surprise me that much if Samford won but I am going with the Eagles. 28-27.

Idaho at Fresno St. Glad Itaho got a win last week but I don't see it continuing this week: Fresno 42 Idaho 21.

NMSU vs. New Mexico: Until NMSU wins a game it is very hard to pick them to win. New Mexico, while maybe not alot better, is the superior team here I think. New Mexico 31 NMSU 21

Western Kentucky at ULM: ULM lost their quarterback last week, so I have to believe they will struggle some on offense. WKU showed up big last week is shutting down Navy. I think momentum is on side of WKU, so I say WKU. 35 ULM 24

Georgia State at Alabama: This one will get ugly. I still believe Ga. State will improve with their new coach but this week Ga. State should just collect the paycheck and get out of town. Alabama 55 Ga. State 10

South Alabama at Troy: South Alabama seems to be making strides upward this year and Troy has played very poorly at times. I think Troy uses the homefield in this one to get back headed in the right direction though. Troy 38 South Alabama 31

Texas St. at Louisiana. These may very well be the best 2 teams in the SunBelt this year. Texas St. has played especially well on defense in the games I have seen, but Louisiana is at home and I just don't see them losing this one at home: Louisiana 35 Texas State 28

Sure that you are correct and the regular Sun Belt (two words) members are probably bored to death with some of this FCS teams discussion. But we both have to deal with it this year to get ready for playing full Sun Belt schedules next year.
Bottom line is that it seems obvious that the Big South teams are suddenly a lot better than they have ever been. One question not asked previously, are they getting some recruits from us both going FBS that they normally would not. I know it wasn't announced until after recruiting season, but many figured it would happen soon. Maybe some recruits that never want to play FBS to have good stats or go against not as good competition. May not be a big effect, but has been something some have mentioned.
