That was not expected..when I looked at the poll i immediately went to others receiving votes and when I did not see NIU looked up and saw 23...then checked date of poll...very surprising.

I was surprised by it too! I was expecting to not make it in until if we beat Kent.
Did Hazell vote NIU #1? I woiuld've, if I was Purdue's coach.
Can't complain about that. Ranked in the poll that matters

He doesn't have a vote. Neither does Ferentz.

Only coaches on our schedule that have votes are Bowden (Akron), English (EMU), and Campbell (Toledo).
If NIU wins next week, they have a VERY GOOD chance to rise quite a bit. Teams ahead of them, with strong chances of losses.

Washington vs. Stanford
NW vs. Ohio St
Maryland vs. FSU
Oklahoma St. vs. Kansas St.
As bad as Michigan has played, Jerry Kill and crew could get that W

Iowa has a good chance to look even better against MSU as well.
Nice wrap-up in USA today, with a picture of Lynch,

Huh. I figured all the coaches had a vote. I guess I never cared enough to check.
Pleasantly surprised (I think the 'margin of victory helped) and at the same time not as excited. "Back in the day" it was HUGE.
I guess I'm feeling that way because of how far we've come and it's not "new" for us to be ranked.

That being said....02-13-banana02-13-banana02-13-banana
I still dont know how Fresno State is getting all these votes. They beat an average Rutgers team by 1 in OT (Compare theat to Iowa), FCS Cal Poly (EIU), Squeaked by Boise (I would compare that to Purdue by the skill of the team this season, and we killed Purdue), then Hawaii which they barley won (Kinda like Idaho for us).

I love that Fresno is getting votes, dont get me wrong, but I doubt that they deserve #23 more then we do.
It just goes to show when we play well (which we played GREAT yesterday) they will respect us.
Margin of victory certainly had alot to do with it, I also think NIU received added attention for being the first MAC team to beat BIG twice in a season(was mentioned in every article I read) and the game being on ESPN2.

If NIU was ranked and Fresno State wasn't they would be saying the same thing about the Huskies.

What? Did you just compare Purdue with Boise State? Boise would score 70 on them. Rutgers is quite competent as well. They beat Arkansas.

Fresno had a slight lead on us in the preseason and they still have that now after two "name" wins in Rutgers and Boise State. Makes sense.
For all the times I thought we deserved a higher ranking, I don't think our schedule and results deserve a ranking yet. But it's nice and I'll take it. If we would have dominated Iowa and Eastern, it would have been much easier to see. Obviously winning the TO's 5-0 helped us run up the score at Purdue. But we also reduced the penalties a bunch. And it's tougher going against teams that have nothing to lose, try a bunch of trick plays, and go for it on many 4th downs (and make it). They're more like we used to be. If we continue to win the TO's and minimize penalties, we should blow out much of the remaining schedule.

Boise is 3-2 right now, they beat basically nobody. Im not saying that they are worse, what I was saying is that our victory over Purdue is better then theirs over Boise.

Come on now, be realistic. Boise wouldn't put up as many points as we did. This Boise is not the Boise we have been accustomed to seeing.
