Wow I didn't realize that Watson had coached McGee at Oklahoma in 1994, before Watson took the UAB job. Interesting.

Watson is the best FBS coach UAB has ever had and he sucked. Hilyer should have been that guy but most of Brown's teams still would have beaten any from the Callaway or McGee era. Due to lower academic requirements Watson had more talent but I think he also had better assistants. Bill Clay, Pat Donohoe, and John Neal were better than anyone we've had on D since Brown left.

McGee can change that opinion Saturday night.

We weren't losers until Watson made us losers.

One can only speculate what improvements of Watson Brown's record might have happened if the facility upgrade in Callaway's first year had been done in the mid or late 1990s instead of after he left. It just may work out that after the passage of time and the cooling of passions, we may realize that Coach Brown did much better with his given situations and facility limitations than many gave him credit for at the time. First some coach will have to do better than Brown at some point yet to come.

I watched Watson Brown put better football players on the field than the opposition and still lose, time after time.

The SMU game. The Rice Game. The Tulane game. Maybe the best example is the georgia game where we almost beat georgia because the players were so pissed at him they wanted to win out of spite.
Watson is a great guy, and would have made a fantastic full time AD, but he is the losingest coach in college football history. That's not hyperbole by the way, he has more losses than any coach with a losing record in the history of college football.

Punting at Oklahoma with 2:26 left while down 7; getting into a shootout with homestanding Hawaii in the bowl game; and the infamous "The East division winner will have 3 conference losses" statement when UAB only had 1 conference loss at the time. The list of stupid stuff for Watson is longer than a car ride with BNBfan to a UAT Bowl game in California.

Burning all our timeouts on D to get the ball back against Misstake. Getting the ball around our own 35 with 1:30 in a tie game and a kicker good for 50-in.. Kneel on it three times and lose in overtime.

How has Brown done since moving on to his new digs in TN??

What is the mystery factor that Brown has an unbroken history of being employed as an FBHC with these terrible records of which we speak? Is he the "Teflon Coach" like Reagan was the "Teflon President"?

Basically what he did here & what he has always done, about a .500 +/- coach w/ the occasional winning season but mostly on the sub .500 side of things. Win just enough to keep job awhile longer but never really do anything so program becomes stagnant in the long run. As Matt said is a good AD & if he stepped aside after Hawaii bowl, UAB probably would've been in better shape now if he had.

Tell that to all the people living in Georgia, particularly the Atlanta Metro.

I'm not trying to defend Watson Brown at all. But the bottom line is wins and losses. Nobody has come close to matching his record yet, albeit a losing record. There are degrees of losing, and Callaway was 18-42. I'm aware Callaway had to cleanup the mess left by WB, but 18-42 is what got him fired.

McGee is 4-11, which is the worst winning percentage of any UAB football coaches (0.267). Although I'm starting to be a little critical of some of his recent decisions, I truly believe he is moving the program in the right direction. I'm still a fan of Coach McGee.

But man, it's a difficult job being the UAB football coach given all of the challenges. And yet Watson Brown still has the best winning percentage at 0.456.

I'm only talking about the division I level.
