Quote:MEMPHIS, Tenn. - After helping the University of Memphis defense limit Arkansas State to just seven points and 255 yards of offense in a 31-7 win last Saturday, Tiger junior defensive end Martin Ifedi was named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

The award marks the first time a Memphis player has garnered player of the week recognition since joining the new conference.

Ifedi led Memphis with 10 tackles including 4.5 tackles for loss (-16 yards) and 2.5 quarterback sacks (-11 yards) in Saturday’s victory. He is the only player in NCAA FBS football this season to tally 4.5 tackles for loss and is one of only six players to register a quarterback sack in each of their respective teams’ first three games.

Ifedi enters the Tigers’ first by week as the nation’s leader in both sacks (1.8 per game) and tackles for loss (3.0 per game).

Arkansas State entered last week’s game averaging 37 points and 544 yards of total offense.

Rutgers’ quarterback Gary Nova, who engineered the Scarlet Knights’ second-half comeback and 28-24 win over Arkansas, was named the Offensive Player of the Week while Rutgers’ wide receiver and kickoff returner Jamarion Grant was named the Special Teams Player of the Week.

Memphis freshman Marquis Warford was named to the American Athletic Conference’s five-player honor roll.

Warford rushed for 173 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries (15.7 yards per carry) in the Tigers’ win over Arkansas State. Warford registered the 17th-best rushing performance in NCAA FBS football this season and the effort also ties for the best rushing total by a freshman in 2013.

Memphis has a bye week before opening play in the American Athletic Conference next Saturday against UCF.
