ESPN notification that Sabans and texas's agents met in January about him going to Texas at the end of this season.
Why would he leave Alabama.
Right now he can write his own ticket
What would Texas have to offer?
This probably happens a dozen times every year for good coaches. I would be surprised if Texas had not approached him.
Texas would be foolish not to approach Saban. Saban would be foolish not to listen. But I'm not holding my breath that he'd actually make the move.
What does Saban have left to accomplish at Alabama?

This is what i feel like. He has to be ready for another challenge. not that the SEC isn't a Challenge, but i think he wants to win a NC with another school. too my knowledge no one has ever done that before. Here is a better question almost though, USC looks to be in the hunt for a new coach also. i fell like if there were ever two programs that could poach him away its those two.

Very true. Brian Kelly, while at Cincinnati, interviewed (without the media knowing about it) for the Washington, and Tennessee gigs. Washington offered he declined, Tennessee did not offer. Not shocked that Saban gave Texas some of his time.

If board members ran college football, Saban would be the coach at Texas, FSU would be in the Big 12 and everyone would be fired.

He could stay where he's at with a team set up already to win many more nc's
And cement his place in college football history as one of the greatest ever if not the greatest ever by retirement

Or move

And spend years building a new team to that level.

It would take Saban a year or 2 at Texas at most. They could bring in a ton of talent at any position in no time flat with Saban's name alone. He'd also make Mack's recruits look 100% better with a little practice time...

Why not?
New challenge.
Much better quality of life.
1. It's old news and due diligence given Mack Brown's last season (not to mention this one).
2. I imagine this is to add fuel to the fire to get rid of Mack at the end of this season. If you can dangle Saban's name it might cause those willing to give Brown the benefit of the doubt to get on board the "replace the coach movement."
3. Saban didn't really want to do anything after he left Alabama but retire. And there will be many wealthy coaches doing that so they can liquidate those 401k's before Sunstein gets permission to annuitize them and ameliorate them with SSI so that the capital is not forfeit to Boomer retirement and so SSI gets bailed out by subtracting annuity amounts from the SSI payout. (This plan has been making the discussion circuit among government budget makers and investment bankers for at least 2 years now).
4. Saban has to remember that if he does forsake Alabama for another lover some rotten toothed trailer park trash from Bessemer will hunt him down with as much venom in his heart as any tree killing Harvey Updike illegitimate brother he may have did when he was insulted by a Cam Newton jersey on Bear's statue.
Saban says he too old to start over. Whether that's true or not remains to be seen. But I doubt he leaves Tuscaloosa. He's got everything he wants in Alabama, and they can match Texas dollar for dollar...

How could Saban possibly have a comfortable retirement if his 24K per annum SS income is offset.

When has Texas not had a top five recruiting class recently?

That's not true. Alabama and the entire state would probably pay whatever it took to keep him but no way Texas could not do more.

I do believe the coaches might be a bit more concerned over simply having the 401k's turned into annuities. But I got a good laugh out of your point. The real problem with the annuities is that the principal is forfeit upon the death of both the participant and their spouse and the balance may not be inherited by heirs. It is another way to just steal the principal. They give you the interest off of your money and pocket the principal. I'm not kidding, they've already done it to one of mine a 403b which is easier to do to non-profits but the big push is to do the same to 401k's. But what the heck we are in a recovery!
It is worth noting the OP stated the "agents" met. Agents meet all the time. It doesn't mean the school was planning a change or the coach had any interest.

Quote:If Saban says no to a seven-year, $70 million deal and the chance to live in the greatest city in the country (and he very well might), then you move on to the next candidate with two things accomplished: you went for the best and established that you'll hire greatness by any means needed.
Not everybody loved the southwest and much less Texas! 07-coffee3
