I can understand why everyone is just talking about the talent of the players UC is signing and recruiting. What surprises me is the academics of some of these guys. Seems like some are just one notch above signing their name with an X. After hearing for months about raising the academics of student athletics looks like that was all just a joke. I know it's unusual circumstances but is Nancy just going to turn the other cheek (I'm talking the rear cheek here) and let all these guys come to UC? Will they just wave everything and not check them out or could there be a problem? Don
They have qualified and do have the grades (both GPA and ACT score) if they are being offered a scholarship. By all accounts, Williamson and Gentry have very good grades and Warren has been doing well in school now. I do think that Vaughn is the one that worries me the most so far in terms of us finding out during the season next year that his grades aren't up to snuff or something.
You make some interesting points.

I think it's a case of Cronin having no other choice. I hope they are checking them out and will truly try to help these players get an education.

More gloom and doom. It's pretty offensive to say they are just a notch above signing their name with an X. James White and Jihad were never known as academic liabilities and they let us down. Maybe kids that had to work harder won't take it for granted?

Let's not include Williamson and Gentry in this discussion, Gentry was talking about going into engineering for crying out loud. Warren is probably deserving of some discussion due to his long journey, but he seems like a kid who has been through enough to understand what is at stake and his coach and Cronin said that he is doing well in school now.

I will say that on the surface Vaughn worries me a little because of his initial shot at the ACT, but I guess he did okay on his second attempt. The one thing about Vaughn that makes it a little better is the fact that he has been playing at Harmony in Cincinnati already, so the whole going away from home thing is one less distraction that he will deal with in terms of getting his work done.

Good point - that was unnecessary.
I was a bit surprised in a way too.

I mean Cronin is basically doing what Huggs did to rebuild the program in the first place. And I think thats a good thing.

I'm just glad the Zunt is keeping her hands off. Which makes me realize this was more a personal vendetta against Huggins than anything.

I think Cronin is being given a little leeway because he simply has no other choice.

Now...once he gets on his feet, if he recruits a bunch of Donald Littles, well, I think then there would be cause for scrutiny.
Don- I had no idea you were privey to confidential transcripts...man..I had you you pegged all wrong...I apologize...please update us on why Jihad and James were suspended...it's nice to know that on the internet you can make blanket statements with no facts to back them up....amazing!!!

Can we get away from this negativity? Without knowing anything about these recruits, that's a pretty insulting statement to make. From some of the comments made on this Board, I wonder about the intelligence of some of the posters.
As long as there are no character red flags (ie: Whaley) and as long as you meet the academic requirements for the Big East which means no non-qualifiers (ie: Banks) he is free to recruit who he wants. Its pretty evident by his comments and actions that that is the framework UC is moving ahead with.

Don, WAKE UP. Bob Huggins firing had little to do with the academic and legal failings of his players, and most everthing to do with his personal character. Academics/legal troubles of players were the excuse, personal conduct was the reason.

I think there's more to the firing than most people will ever know.

and what factual documentation do you have to back up your "What surprises me is the academics of some of these guys" quote? Gentry, I believe is like an academic allamerican or something like this......please support your comments with facts not "seems like" logic.....
I can't remember Donald Little ever having a problem with academics. I thought he was actually a fairly intelligent guy. Judgement issues out the wazoo of course, but I am not sure you can fairly rip his intelligence.

Roy Bright was no dummy either. Sometimes a kid just decides to do something monumentally stupid. You can't always predict that in a transcript.

However being a leader you set a certain standard and acceptability bar in your own behavior. Anything including positive or negative personal "issues" you bring to the table will probably be mirrored to some extent. I believe that coaches and all leaders more or less get a reflection of themselves in their team.

agreed.....a player could be very intelligent but still do illegle/immoral activities.....

I'm just wondering where Don is coming up with his remarks about Mick's recruits "are just one notch above signing their name with an X.".....this is a bold statement to make and needs to be supplied with back up documentation, not "seems like" logic-which looks like what Don is using....

Great....now we are going to be short and Irish?

The BOT had already made up their mind not to keep Huggins before his DUI. It's unfortunate they dropped the ball by not letting him go after his DUI

Tell us again about how Greg Marshall is a lock to be the next coach or that Jamie Mahaffey would be a great hire

lmfao
Well for starters I don't know if it's a fact or not but I don't think from what I've read that any of the MMM's current signers qualified for college on academics out of high school. That doesn't mean they are stupid but they do have problems. I just thought we were supposed to be over and done with that. If anything it's worse. It's a topic because the MMM is still saying everyone will graduate. Personally I don't care if they can spell cat after they get out of UC as long as they can stay on the floor and win games. I didn't like the ideal of a better academic kid that maybe wasn't that good of a player to start with. I'm all about winning games. The rest of it can take a walk. Don
