Just curious.
Obviously I don't know for sure, but we used to get conduct grades as well...

E - Excellent
S - Satisfactory
N - Needs Improvement

Perhaps to avoid confusing a poor letter grade of E with an excellent conduct grade?

Yupp. I remember some early grades being on the E/S/N/U grading scale. U being Unsatisfactory.

You know I about had a heart attack when my first grader came home last year with a report card full of "E's". I thought she had failed everything. Took me a minute to realize the "E" now stood for "excellent". I was so used to "E" meaning "fail".

Hey, never thought of that... Thanks...

All we got in Kindergarten were S's and U's...
Well, and F= Failed.

Drunk.
And they say we have an intellectual crisis in this country.
Obviously those who said that have never visited out threads.
Good thread.

This is not new. I remember getting this scale through elementary school, and getting letter grades when I started middle school.

It was new to me, but I adjusted rather rapidly.
F=fail.

(yes its really that simple)

a few actually use E instead of F though

No kidding? I was in Kindergarten in 1984 and we got either an S or a U... When I got to first grade, it was all letter grades (A - F) from there...

Ok genius, WTF does A, B, C, and D mean then?

Fairly sure, but then I was in elementary school a long time ago.
I think we did E, S, and U until third grade, then the standard grading scale 3 on up.
Mobile County used "E" for failing when I was in elementary school.

they were just the 4 alphabetical letters for passing, E was also used in place of F. those 5 letters stand for nothing

but because F is only one letter off, and fail starts with it quickly became a commonly used abbreviation in place of E.

A lot of people have said that its used because E can be changed to B pretty easily, but thats a myth because the grading system was created by colleges.

the only real practical purpose the F has instead of an E is using it with the P/F system, but other than that it just evolved because it was simpler.

kinda like morse code with SOS. it was never intended to be a distress signal but simplicity made it the international standard
This brings back memories - I remember flirting with a "U" in the behavior boxes when I was first in school.........had a tough time keeping quiet in class. I shut-up better after a couple of paddlings.
