I really don't think that kept people from going to the campus dining hall for the most part. I am highly opposed to mandatory meal plans as it is, but I really hated the way UAB did it.

You can use your BlazerBucks card off campus. Dominos, Al's, Purple Onion, CVS all take BlazerBucks. How it works, though, is that BlazerBucks, while being the same card as a meal plan, isn't the meal plan. Meal plan dollars can only be spent at the campus facilities. BlazerBucks is basically a debit card run by UAB that you deposit a separate pot of money into.

Don't know if that separation exists at UAH, I imagine it probably does, because the way UAB does it is the way it works at UA, Auburn, and everywhere else I've ever seen mandatory meal plans. Either that or I would imagine there is a huge tax on off-campus meal plan transactions. Otherwise, there's no point in pissing off the students. They market it as "ensuring a healthy student body" but it's really just to guarantee revenue streams to their dining contractor, not to off-campus restaurants.

From what I've been told, UAH and UA students can use their meal plan money on certain off-campus restaurants (not operated by the school).

UA's "Dining Dollars" is in addition to the meal plan. You can use them at vending machines and 3 off campus locations. So, you're actually getting MORE screwed in Tuscaloosa. Shocking

You may be right about UAH mixedup. It was a few years back at this point, so I don't really remember all the details. I seem to remember that I was able to use whatever I was forced to pay at any of the locations though.

UAB has Dining Dollars as part of their meal plan too.

I love Fat Sam's as much as anyone, but you have to admit that the place is in pretty rough shape these days. It is the definition of dive. Fairly grungy. And Sam is pretty liberal with the language, which is his personality and it is what it is.

I say that to say, I imagine it tends to be a guys only type place for most.

It's about the same atmosphere as it was when I first started going there 10 years ago. It might feel different coming back.

He surprisingly gets a good number of women that come in in their 30s-50s. He's definitely a big supporter of UAB! I know he went to the Troy game, I drove him, haha.

Definitely not for everyone, but for lots of people.

Well if he went to the Troy game to pull for UAB, then tell me where this joint is so that I can try it out, niche or not... Its a BLAZER place in my book.

Fat Sam does not need to go to the Troy game to confirm his UAB bona fides. He's across the street, kind of, from the BEC. In the little strip where the Little Island Cafe and University Package Store are
Fat Sams is on 11th Ave S up the street from Glen Iris elementary.
You can use Blazer Bucks at Dreamland... they even have the Blazer Bucks logo on their menu. I know a few food trucks are going to be accepting Blazer Bucks soon, if they aren't already.

Blazer Bucks are not the same thing as Dining Dollars.
The Subways out where (3 w/in a few miles) I live in Inverness/280 don't have any special cups that I've seen. Either it's related to Subway's at campuses or the difference between franchised or corporate owned Subways. If corporate, I'm sure they only see the BCS/P5 teams vs all the other local teams then again the local franchisee might be a bama fan not a UAB fan.

They have them at the subway in Calera which is not corporate owned.

Yea you really can't get anything with dining dollars
The thing that pisses me off the most about the Subway on campus is that the "distinctive" Subway stench permeates the wall and stinks up Snoozy's whilst I'm shopping for top-shelf Blazer gear with friendly, unparalleled customer service. *collects endorsement check*
Blazerbucks are terrible because they cost wayy too much to buy into. Unless you are like Al's or the Kangaroo gas station, there's no way that it's worth it. I wouldn't even imagine it's worth the buy-in for Formaggio's or Purple Onion.

I beg to differ. When i was at McAlister's Deli for 10 years Blazerbucks did about $900 for the first year. But the second year and up we averaged around $7500-$9000 a year. Now I'm at Moes Southwest Grill and in January 2014 will be the first complete year we have it. Right now we average about $750 per month. Guthries, and Zen Yogurt take blazerbucks and hear its going very well for them to.

As many students that go to Formaggio's and Purple Onion they should buy in to it. Thats $9000 there missing out on.
I rescind my previous statement, haha

Dumb Hambit.

I see you and Fat Sam are cozying up really close in my absence
The only thing I ever used BlazerBucks for was laundry in the dorms and making copies. I don't get the point of using it as a debit card for anything other than those things, unless it's a vehicle to get money from your parents.

Fat Sam's has awesome food. The place is older and may not look much different than it did 20 years ago. Its has always been one of the few places that always had UAB stuff on the walls. To this day, when alot of former players, multiple sports, come back to campus they go by and visit him and eat. Hell do you realize he has a signed game football from the first UAB vs LSU game. He was at that game, I remember seeing him there.

Fat Sam's Substation 1154 11th Ave South 205-252-2300
He's on 11th and 11th. But don't go just because he bleeds green. Go because he makes a helluva sandwich.
