Tulsa getting smacked by Bowling Green 27-0 middle of the 4th quarter. Bowling Green brought 9 starters back from the #6 Total Defense last year and have stuffed Tulsa's running game. Cody Green still is inconsistent with throwing the ball. Will be imperative for us when we face them down the line to make Green beat us with his arm.

edit: Oh, and Tulsa's kicker has missed 2 chip shots.
The unanimous coaches pick to win the West now down 34-0 @ BGSU. Not quite sure what to make of it. Tulsa offense not able to do much of anything.

QB Cody Green was pulled for for Dane Evans in the 4th.

Bowling Green is getting tons of pressure on Green without having to blitz. Not sure if that is o-line issues or just that BGSU's D is that good. And Green has missed some pretty easy throws.
The new Big East is off to a roaring start with Tulsa stinking up Ohio while holdover UConn is losing at home to Towson.
And backup Evans gets Tulsa on the board with a strike on a corner route. QB controversy in the Mid-Con?
Utah St. over Utah early in the 3rd Q..

MemOwl will be along shortly to tell us about Keeton's performance.
Nice to see Vanderbilt have a packed stadium with a great student turnout against Ole Miss.
I thought Tulsa looked very poor. I'm not sure if that is a reflection on how bad the CUSA will be, but it certainly could be a harbinger of things to come. It also appears Tulsa had some defensive injuries and that was where they were thin to begin with.
Tulane, sporting new all-gray duds, leads Jackson St. 27-0.

Just got back home after a long travel day. Didn't see any of it. I'll of course read the box but any color commentary from those who watched it will be welcome.
USC up on Hawaii 3-2 in the 2nd inning.. USC not looking good.
Vandy game is good watching, but it seems like a lot of Mississippi fans are in the stadium, or they all happen to be near where the field mics are located.
Keeton did well. Battling cramps all day. The commentators even made comparisons to Johnny Football.

Good stuff.

Looks like a successful onside kick by the opponent leads to a USU loss. That seems to be a recurring theme in their close losses during Chuckie's time there; I think Chuckie should put himself on KOR.

for the record, I think DJ's half against AF reflected well on the (according to a poster here) decision of our coach to prefer DJ over Chuckie. My gripes are

1. it took too long. Chuckie was making things happen from the opening play of his true freshman year, whereas DJ was only given the full playbook in the 25th game the owls played with him on campus

2. Chuckie is way, way, way better than our starting QB. So if DJ is in the same zip code as Chuckie, why is McHargue still our starting QB? (yes, I'm using the transitive property, but I think it applies to individuals if not to teams).

Vandy always has a lot of visiting fans. Most SEC schools use the Vandy game as an opportunity to get tickets to their supporters who can't or don't give enough money yet to get into the pecking order for home game tickets. Nashville's a good trip, and not too far from most anywhere in the conference. Vandy games have the reputation for having more good looking women in attendance than anywhere else.

Big if.

You have a good point, assuming DJ always could and always will play at the level of his one spectacular half.

I just want to see more than a single half of good play against a service academy before I lock into him. If he comes in against A$M and duplicates his AFA performance, I will join you. I think he will get plenty of opportunity this year to prove you right.

What you are missing is the crapshoot aspect of recruiting.

The vast majority of FBS coaching staffs thought the QB(s) they signed in 2011 would be better than Keeton. The vast majority of them turned out to be wrong. Even Utah State, with Keeton already in the fold, hedged their bet by adding a juco guy in the same class.

For Rice, like most schools, that cuts both ways. We missed on Keeton among many others. But we benefited from everybody else missing on guys like Dillard, Casey, and Solomon.

I do sort of bristle whenever somebody uses those guys as proof that our coaches (across 3 straight staffs!) are superior evaluators. Most coaches have hits and misses, and ours are no exception.
I was thinking that could have been us when I watched part of the game last night. You have often mentioned that Rice should have taken an SEC invitation back in 1991, which we did not take because we would have had to spend to upgrade our facilities (which needed upgrading anyway). I think the SEC schiools that have a waiting list for season tickets are Alabama, A&M and LSU. We could get a lot of those SEC fans from other schools like we did when we had the LSU series. It was a disappointment to me that LSU is coming to Houston next year but their opponent is Wisconsin in Reliant. The only school that messed even more is Tulane that withdrew from the SEC about 50 years ago to de-emphasize football. I think Georgia Tech had also been in the SEC a long time ago.

The SEC and not just Vanderbilt are known for the beautiful women who attend the football games.

It is a pity that Ole Miss came back late and won the game.

re Keeton...

He also seemed to make a number of plays with his feet... which while admirable, could also be a sign that he made poor reads to begin with. He seemed to recognize single coverage and make some good (and a few superb) throws... but he also hung a few receivers out for some big hits. Using this purely as an example and using common themes, though not implying at all that they are factual... it is entirely possible that the coaches thought they were comparable in terms of using their feet with Keeton being slightly superior, but Bailiff preferred DJs reading ability to encourage him to stay within the offense... while USU preferred to take advantage of Keaton's improvisation even when it took him out of the offense... and reading defenses at this level takes more time and experience while improvisation works well from day one.

Purely an example, but one that would be consistent with what my eyes see.
Tulsa looked terrible. Very surprising.
