Hopefully Downey gives Cronin some chance during a get to know process before deciding to leave. But one thing that Downey said after the South Carolina NIT game does make it hard for me to figure out why he is so interested in bolting because he offered it freely. I remember that he said that he "did not want to start all over again somewhere" or something to that effect, which seems to be pretty straight from his heart on that point rather than the question of whether he was just saying something at the end of an emotional season. I guess we will see soon enough.
That is where you worry about the bad advice from others....like AAU, other former coaches, parents etc. examples Ivan Johnson, Coleman's parents etc. They have been known to pressure for what is best for them not the kid in some cases. Not to say this is the case here but you do have to worry with our luck.
Speaking of which, whatever happened to Coleman? Not that I care, but curious nonetheless.

I find it hard to see how a parent would be "looking out for themselves" in Downey's case. All of these people (parents, AAU coaches, HS coaches) are assumed to have bad advice but the people at UC who want Downey for their own selfish reasons are assumed to be provided "good advice."
Yeah, Mick Cronin is the only person Devan should be listening to. 01-lauramac2

Very well said. How are we to know that Devan even likes Mick? If you don't like the coach you can't play for them.

FWIW, I did see where Downey's AAU coach said something along the lines of Mick being a great guy. So at least his circle haven't yet been putting out word that he has an issue with Cronin himself.

Yeah, but all of the OTHER things his 'people' have been saying has led me to give up any hope of him being here. I just wish he'd make up his mind right quick. Trent posted on his blog that it may be a while before we hear any more news, however.....
Did Downey give a timeframe for his decision?

I asked that question before, and was greeted with, "who cares? he's gone," and the like.

Said he was not going to rush it...wanting to focus on finishing the school year... (paraphrase) Something about sitting back and relaxing?

he needs to make a decision because if he's leaving, Mick needs time to recruit a JUCO PG......as it is now, if Downey stays, we have a zero chance at getting a good juco pg because they are not going to come in here and sit out their two years of playing time behind Downey. I hope like heck he stays, but for UC's sake, he needs to make up his mind asap.

He's not going to do something for your benefit. Stop being so selfish, and look at the big picture. He is a 19 year old kid, who is in the middle of one of the biggest decisions of his life, thus far. Give him all the time he needs to think through this with his friends and family. He can't, nor should, he worry about Mick or UC's short-term recruiting needs. UC will be just fine. He has to look our for himself and his future first and foremost, whatever that may be.
My guess is Mick already has in mind what he wants to do whether Devan leaves or not. He can recruit another 1 that can shoot it and play him as the two who handles the ball some of the time and plays the 2 a lot. Jihad did it this year and did pretty well as he could spot up for open 3's when Devan drove. They will get their share of time handling the ball with Devan out and at times when he's in. My guess is any JUCO would love to start and play in the Big East.

This isn't "for me", I have nothing to do with it....I'm just a fan. I'm saying, from UC's perspective, they need him to make a decision and roll....UC has to move forward with or without him and they can't "sit and let him talke alllllll the time he needs to make a decision" because like it or not, UC has a program to put together and the program is BIGGER than Devon.....you're looking at things from "poor" devon's view and I'm looking at them from UC's view. I'm not saying he needs to have his decision by midnight tonight, but in the same token, her certainly can't sit for four months and take his time...UC doesn't have time for this. So, if I'm being "selfish", I'm looking at things like Mick would be...HE has a program to build with our without him and MICK needs to know what's going on so he can react accordingly......
We still need more players whether or not Devan is here or not. We have been known this past year to play with 2 points on the floor at the same time.

I really don't think Mick is waiting for Devan to make a decision so THEN he can go out and recruit based on that decision. I would have to believe that Mick is recruiting for every position right now. We will need more guards regardless of what happens with Devan.

What bothers me is that Devan has now proven himself as a high major b-ball player and those giving him advice may have an asking price for delivering him to another program. That makes Devan a piece of property to whoever is selling him and making money. The kid needs to realize this. Most of the people giving him advice have something to gain for themself rather than Devan's best interest.

If Devan was truly sincere in saying he loved Cincinnati, the environment, and his fans and friends here, then he should really think about that. Why leave if he is truly happy here as he said.........unless he was lying. I hope not. How many kids have we watched over the years get screwed over by family or friends or AAU coaches out for themselves? Many. So many bad decisions influenced by the wrong people. And the kids will swear up and down at the time that their advisors have their best interest at heart..........but we find them later screwed over.

Downey needs to go with his heart. He needs to give Mick some time and talk to former players who know Mick and his style to be reassured that Cronin can get the job done as a coach and a recruiter. I think Devan should give it one season and see who else is coming here this Spring and who Mick can get next Fall. He might like what he sees.
