DeLuca Named BIG EAST Player of the Week

Senior hit .583 in sweep of USF

April 3, 2006

PROVIDENCE, R.I.---University of Cincinnati senior Jon DeLuca has been named the BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week after helping the Bearcats to a key three-game sweep of league foe South Florida over the weekend. DeLuca joins teammate Logan Parker as UC players named conference player of the week this season.

In three games against the Bulls, DeLuca hit .583 (7 for 12), while driving in seven runs and doubling three times. In the series opener, DeLuca tied the UC single game record with three doubles, a feat last achieved by current teammate Jack Nelson two seasons ago. The Bearcat third baseman matched his career-high in the same game with four RBI.

DeLuca followed up his game one performance with back-to-back two hit games. In the finale, DeLuca singled home the game-tying run as part of a three-run ninth inning comeback by the Bearcats. At third base, DeLuca handled six chances on the weekend without an error.

This week's award marks the second such accolade of DeLuca's career. He was also chosen as the Conference USA Hitter of the Week on Feb. 21, 2005.

The Bearcats are now 16-10 this season and 3-3 in BIG EAST play. UC travels to Ohio for a 6 p.m. contest on Wednesday before travelling to Seton Hall for a three-game BIG EAST set next weekend.
