Another nice story from Ryan.

Talks about how the former UT FB director of operations gave the incoming freshman football players a crash course in living on their own:

Quote:The first week he spoke about checking accounts and online banking, and where banks are located around campus.

The next he discussed spending choices and the value of budgeting.

He concluded the three-week seminar with advice on investing and explained the difference between good and bad debt.

Also, Paul Helgren tweeted today how the women's soccer team & volleyball team went through a social media presentation - talking to them about the use of Twitter, Facebook, etc. The football team went through it this evening. And I'm glad. Looking at some of their twitters, the language they use is embarrassing (using cuss words left and right, along with the 'N' word a lot).
Nice program but I wonder how campus, let alone academia would react? Strike anyone else as a bit sketchy? This was the "other" strange article I referred to in my post on yesterday's Norril's article.

The concern that first came to my mind, he seemed to be clearly describing a "jock" course. I wouldn't think that permitted. They may be useful skills that EVERY student would benefit to have, as described it seems more vocational than academic. They are trying to rid the Universities of remedial courses in English and Maths yet they're thinking of instituting a Freshman High School Home-Ec course?

I think it would be a good non-credit service course for any university to provide their students. I'm not sure is it of academic quality. We make fun of BG for their course in comic books, a part of Pop-Culture a legitimate study. Does UT really want the ribbing they'd get for giving credit to students that do their laundry?
I started at UT in 1985 and I still can't iron a shirt.....

I never wrote a check until I went to college, had to ask the person I was writing to how it was done.

I studied Trig, Geometry, Bio, etc. not that stuff in high school.....

Might want to make that presentation mandatory for coaches as well.
