NORFOLK, Virginia — The numbers that made Old Dominion quarterback Taylor Heinicke the Walter Payton Award winner as the best offensive player at the Championship Subdivision level last season border on the ridiculous:

— an NCAA-record 5,076 passing yards, including 730 in one game.

— 44 touchdown passes, and 11 more TDs on the ground.

The Monarchs are 38-10 in four years since football was revived.

Heinicke expects opponents to know the numbers, too, especially as the Monarchs hope to continue their high-flying success even as they begin the transition to the Bowl Subdivision level with five games against programs at that level, including three from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

"I'm sure a lot of the teams we're going to be playing this year are sick of hearing about us, about all the success we've had in FCS

"He is the marquee player coming in and if any of those five FBS teams are even going to give us a second look, probably the second look is going to be at him," Monarchs coach Bobby Wilder said. "And then they're going to look and say, 'Hey, those wideouts are pretty good, and that O-line's not bad.'

"He's the guy that's going to make someone's head turn."

Heinicke welcomes the chance to give them something to see, too, and think his teammates shares in that, particularly since many will be facing off against FBS-level schools from their own backyards that never gave them a second thought coming out of high school.
