Wolo had the CA prep writer (can't remember his name) on this morning and asked how the Fuente staff is doing with local recruiting and what the feedback is from the local HS coaches.

The writer responded that the consensus of the local HS coaches is that Fuente's staff isn't really focusing much on the local kids. He mentioned there were some kids who were offerred by schools like Cincinnati and ole miss, but hadn't heard from the Memphis staff.

Wolo said that Fuente is going to be on tomorrow (Friday) morning and that Wolo will ask Fuente about his recruring philosophy and strategy regarding the local kids.
The local high school coaches have been saying the same thing for 40 years. Even when Porter was coaching. Same shtt different day.
why waste your time, most if not all of the top talent leaves the city, every year.
Successful recruiting means proper allocation of resources. What's the point of messing with guys you can't get? He's been doing well getting mid level talent to come here.
Memphis can't pay the local coaches enough to keep the players here, anyway

For anybody that thinks he's kidding, guess again. It happens. And it's a steady payroll.

Heard the same from an assistant coach for one of the directional U's in Louisiana. The conversation took place about 8 years ago and he has since moved on from directional U. He has worked for more than one sec school as an assistant. Had some very interesting comments about Shrek and this antics down in Oxpatch, USA.

Let them think that.
We need to recruit locally...if we don't we will find it difficult to sustain improvement...
Of course we do recruit locally. How foolish would it be to not try to get realistically attainable players that would help your team and are in your back yard.

The local coaches' claims to the contrary with every staff are just a way to make a power play, for a variety of reasons.

It doesn't matter, they will continue to do it. Have been doing it for years and years and years.

What? So your saying that players are a little cheaper elsewhere?
Come on now, we are talking about high school athletes that have been front and center for several years of crap football. What do we expect them to do? The Tigers haven't demonstrated that they can win on a consistent basis, yet.

I remember distinctly a dozen years ago when the Albert Means/Alabama thing had just started heating up that George Lapides made an astute comment about the local high school coaches.

He stated that the majority/all steered the high quality players to the SEC (and away from the U of M) and viewed that as some type of status symbol that validated the coach himself. Yet in the next breathe in so many words he said, "the OVC type players, the local high school coaches do steer to Memphis. And those same high school coaches don't want, but expect the Tigers to sign them. And when they don't sign them, they badmouth the school and Tiger staff."

Without any inside knowledge, I thought there was a lot of validity to his summary. And I've been hopeful that things have changed but perhaps not, unfortunately.
