Just another reason why the AAC basketball needs to stay in the Bluff City. Too much to do and see in one tournament. Memphis, TN, on the world's top 20 list along with small fry like Paris and Venice. 03-wink

Nothing against Memphis (it is surely a more touristy destination than Houston) but top 20 in the world? Yeah I would have to say that is inaccurate.

Just one writers opinion.

Memphis is an outstanding city for music and food; and it finally looks like they are really doing good things in that city.

Now we just need to oust the mayor. And the city council...

Why? I was just there this past weekend with some other family members from out of town and we all commented on how much better the city is looking.

I have enjoyed each trip I have made to Memphis just don't see it as a top 20 local in the world. I could list 20 or more desirable destinations across the globe.

Just my opinion the same as the writer who included them on the list.
At least it doesn't say New Orleans. I've been and it's not the fun destination people make it seem.
Odd list. They list countries (Ireland, Nicaragua), areas (Adirondack Mountains, Crimea), and cities. You would think they could pick one of the three to be consistent.

Sadly, I think they missed several gems in all categories. Finland is absolutely gorgeous - especially as you travel north into less populated areas. Beautiful in every season. Greece, especially the islands - Milos, Santorini, Mykonos etc - although its been a few years so they may be too commercialized now. Banff, Alberta and the Canadian Rockies - just wow. Northern Virginia, Blue Ridge parkway very nice. I also enjoyed Pennsylvania, Amish Country, Gettysburg heading East until you hit outskirts of Philly. Love Montreal and Toronto, and was even surprised by Buffalo for a business trip a few years ago.

I like DC for the History, been there numerous times for business, but just don't see the appeal for the international tourist.

Its a nice feather for Memphis to be on the list, and odd that the usual suspects: San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Boston, Chicago, Denver etc did not make the list.

Dude Memphis is a much better city then people make it out to be. I love it.
I agree that Memphis is an awesome city, I try to find as many excuses as I can to get down there, but these lists are always pretty funny. I don't know that I would put it in the Top 20 worldwide, but I still love the city and the entertainment it always provides.

As an example to how fishy these lists can be, Cincinnati was ranked as the #3 Weekend Getaway in the USA this past year by some publication. I live in Cincinnati, and absolutely love the city, but that's an affront to weekend getaways lol

Maybe they meant Cincinnati was the third most popular place people wanted to get away from.05-stirthepot

Could be equally as right lol
This list, lists Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Memphis... but doesn't include the #1 tourist destination in the world (Orlando)...

There's something up with this list.

Since it's on msn, I believe it's a personal list of the locations the author has visited.

There is a difference between tourist destination and tourist trap. 05-stirthepot
I know when I plan a vacation Memphis is always the first place that comes to mind. Beautiful beaches, clean blue water, no crime, epic scenery....its got it all

Big tourist destinations are often also some of the worst to 'visit'. A lot of the areas listed have visitors but aren't absolutely covered in them every single day.

Tourists kill the desirability of a city.

You are overlooking the INTERNATIONAL appeal of Memphis. Many affluent people around the world planning a trip to the US want to get a feel of authentic American culture and ambience, and are less interested in tourist traps, beaches, etc. The Mississippi River (which can now be experienced aboard the luxurious American Queen riverboat which docks here), Blues music, Elvis, Southern cuisine, etc. are international icons.
Did someone try to say that Memphis is a better overall destination compared to NOLA? That's so cute.
Folks always mention the music in Memphis but there's also Shelby Farms Park --- 4,500 acres and it's in the frackin city. It was mentioned in the article that there are 6.5 miles of trails -- that's WAY WRONG even if they're only counting the paved trails. Maybe double that for paved and at least that much for unpaved in the Lucius Burch portion of the park. Now there's also the Greenline Parkway with about 10 miles of paved trails. All inside the city.
