Quote:Cardinal Francis George is being called out in a petition drive to drop plans to offer mass at a conference where critics say therapists and priests will be trained in “dangerous ex-gay” therapy or controversial conversion therapy.

But conference organizers deny the claim.

At the four-day “Courage Conference,” which kicks off Thursday in Mundelein, George is scheduled to celebrate mass on Friday morning. Courage International Inc., a Connecticut-based Roman Catholic Apostolate, is hosting the program.

Executive Director Father Paul Check says the organization provides spiritual support for Catholic men and women with “same-sex attractions” who desire to live chaste lives in accordance with the Roman Catholic Church’s teaching on homosexuality.

The conference plans to hold a “Therapist Seminar” scheduled for Friday. But Check said while the Courage community has members of the mental health profession, “their work for us and with us is not directed towards a change of sexual inclination or desire” and emphasized that’s not the organization’s mission.

Despite California's efforts, conversion therapy, which was previously contained to Christian Evangelicals, is going mainstream.

Is it? With Exodus shutting down, it seemed like the therapy was being tossed aside.
A high ranking Cardinal in the Catholic Church is about as mainstream as it gets.

I'd say I'm more qualified to make a judgement on this subject that the rest of the posters here.
So alcoholics, compulsive gamblers and schizos can just say they are more qualified than family and friends and label any therapy bs.

Therapy is not effective for the vast majority of conditions. Source: I have a Masters degree in psychology.
the fact that the vast majority of psychologists are against gay conversion therapy is proof enough that its BS

I agree and needed no degree.

And people used to think blacks were genetically inferior. Funny how that works.
Feigning outrage What! Your comparing genetics to mental illness?

How quint. You still think that the gay is a disease. Let me ask you something: At what point does sexual preference of any kind become defined as a mental illness? Is a foot fetish a mental illness? what about chubby chasers? BDSM? While we're at it, mental illness needs to be defined:

"Any of various conditions characterized by impairment of an individual's normal cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning, and caused by social, psychological, biochemical, genetic, or other factors, such as infection or head trauma. Also called emotional illness, mental disease, mental disorder."

It's simple really. In order for something to be classified as a mental illness (and be included in the DSM), impairment is a required. Homosexuality does not impair someone from functioning normally, and therefore it's not a disorder.

I'm going to leave the discussion of sexuality to another day, but right now I just want to focus on the other part of john's comment: the idea that "proof of BS" can be determined on the basis of whether "the vast majority of psychologists" are against something, or not. That part of the comment just blows my mind.

I think one of the main differences between people today is the willingness (or unwillingness) to defer to "Expert Opinion" as something that is important and trustworthy. Some people think that if "the vast majority of psychologists" say X, then X it must be true, or is very probably true. Other people think that the entire "discipline" of psychology is barely half-a-step up from Ouija boards and astrology, in terms of significance and credibility. Trying to reconcile those two irreconcilable views is one of the great challenges of our time.

That's a whole different can of worms. Psychology is a broad field, and many of us in it consider certain subfields to be pseudoscience. But in terms of therapy treatments, it's pretty easy to figure out if gay conversion works. It doesn't.

If you're putting it somewhere other than a vag, your not functioning normally.

Of course the good Cardinal is violating Catechism 2358 by doing so. But of course, Catechism 2358 is violated by the Conservative leadership of the Vatican appointed US Church leadership on just about a daily basis.

Conversion torture isn't going mainstream. In 10 years, it will be illegal in more places.

Besides being very harmful to the majority of participants whose parents force them to undergo it, it doesn't work.
Damn, you guys are really scared of a few of your ranks leaving.
