Was looking at the list of QBs that have won MAC Championships in the last 10 years-

2012- Jordon Lynch, NIU/ active
2011- Chandler Harnish, NIU/ NFL 7th Round
2010- Austin Boucher, Miami/ active
2009- Dan LeFevour, CMU/ NFL 6th Round
2008- Drew Willy, Buffalo/ NFL UDFA
2007- Dan LeFevour, CMU/ NFL 6th Round
2006- Dan LeFevour, CMU/ NFL 6th Round
2005- Luke Getsy, Akron/ NFL UDFA
2004- Bruce Gradkowski, Toledo/ NFL 6th Round
2003- Ben Roethlisberger, Miami/ NFL 1st Round

Got me thinking- how bad can a QB be and still win a MAC Championship? Does he have to be top 5? top 3? Can a good team with an average to poor QB?

How would you rate the worst guy on this list compared to other MAC QBs that year? Who's the best MAC QB of the last 10 years not on this list?
Julian Edleman? Josh Cribbs? Both were not classic QBs but were often the best athletes on the field.

Cleve Bryant - 49% Completion percentage.

Nate Davis, Ball State QB, who went on to play for the 49ers was pretty good.

Josh Harris and Omar Jacobs for BGSU.

NIU has had plenty of good QBs without giving them Boucher of Miami. They don't need any additional MACCs either. Besides, I think that was one of Toledo's 42 MAC Championship years. I'll have to watch our recruiting video again to be sure.

He passed both right and left handed.

I think Austin Boucher would object to you listing him from NIU!

If you're idea of "bad" is being taken in the low rounds of the NFL draft or being signed as an UDFA, then I think you need to re-think your definition. "Bad" by NFL standards is much different than "Bad" by college standards.

Ask anyone that watched MAC play from the years 2006-09 if they thought LeFevour was "bad". They'll laugh in your face. Same with Harnish or Gradkowski.

To go off of your tally, here's the QBs that have won the MAC West the past 10 years.

2012- Jordan Lynch, NIU
2011- Chandler Harnish, NIU
2010- Chandler Harnish, NIU
2009- Dan LeFevour, CMU
2008- Nate Davis, Ball State
2007- Dan LeFevour, CMU
2006- Dan LeFevour, CMU
2005- Dan Nicholson, NIU
2004- Bruce Gradkowski, Toledo
2003- Josh Harris, BGSU

Only 1 of those QBs would be considered "bad" by the majority of MAC fans and that's Nicholson (even NIU fans will tell you he was pretty bad). Everybody else on that list was a damn good college QB.

And to answer your initial question about how good a QB you need to have to win the MAC, the majority of the time you need a good or a very good one.
2005 was all Garrett Wolfe... Nicholson was just there to hand it to him without fumbling

Looks like a bunch of good QB's to me. The only one I don't remember is Luke Getsy. I am not sure but Drew Willy of the SUNYAB Bulls might be the most average QB on this list.

Haldi, Horvath, Nicholson...not one of them I would consider "good." Haldi was serviceable and the other two were bad.

Getsy, along with Boucher, was outstanding in the last minute of the MACC game03-hissyfit03-hissyfit
to clarify, my point wasn't that there are some bad QBs that have won MACCs, its the opposite- this list looks like you have to be an awesome QB to win. It's impressive. That's what I meant by how bad can you be and still win, can a team with a QB who isn't one of the 3 best (or is the cut off 4 or 5 best?) in the league that year still win it all?

oops on the Boucher NIU. thanks for the heads up. corrected.

I'm pretty sure that it isn't Chamdler, either.

Luke Getsy, if i remember correctly, was a transfer from Pitt. He was actually pretty good and teamed up with Domenik Hixon to beat us in the last minute of the 2005 MAC Championship...ugh!

Uh, NIU didn't come into existence when you reached puberty, but even for the short-sighted who only look back the ten years in qqueestion, Harnish andd Lynch are LOT! Thought you were an NIU fan?

7 wants to be that semi-obnoxious cynical sports guy everyone loves to hate. He is smart and only a young dude but I already bet he yells a small children to get his lawn.
Ohio reached the MAC title game with Austin Everson at QB. He managed games with few turnovers that year, but wasn't elite. He was hurt and couldn't play in the title game and his backups were not good in that game. Ohio was a running team behind Kalvin Mccrae that year. They didn't the ability to play from behind that year.
