Guys, it doesn't make any sense for why you are so outraged over this. The Liberty Bowl managers prefer to have a P5 vs P5 matchup than to give one of those slots to the American. I'm sure there was a lot of research done by the Liberty bowl to see which combinations would provide the greatest revenue projections. This plus them doing their best to go after the P5 conferences resulted in this decision.
Memphis residents should be thrilled because it will allow for the bowl to maximize revenues, and when you couple that with the visiting fans spending money in Memphis, the city residents benefit.
I don't get the rage from AAC fans. Yes, it may suck to not get the best bowls, but it's not based on a concerted effort to keep the AAC down. I believe it has everything to do with which conferences provide the most revenue to the bowls, TV ratings, etc. The American is not as prestigious as the other P5 conferences. There's no disputing that. The name recognition is simply not at the same level, and the ESPN TV contract reflects what the market is willing to pay to see AAC sports on TV. The best the American can do is to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and to win on the field and get their fans engaged so that the TV execs and bowls SEE what the American has to offer.

A+. They need to realize the LB made a business decision as to who will bring better match ups and more fans/money that will stay in hotels/spend money in Memphis.
I feel like this is a repeat. We want new material or more in depth discussion of old characters---like the other guy said, how about more nuggets from Japanese business dinners. Guys, I hate to burst your bubble but this is not a troll thread. I'm serious 100%. I realize that a lot of the people who PM me and thank me for my insight know that I am serious plus have a fantastic track record of giving the inside scoop, I still have a vocal minority that do not appreciate my candor and no nonsense approach. That's OK since you will never please everyone.
My only wish is that people would realize that people are going to do things that are for the greater good, and for the city of Memphis it is for the greater good that the Liberty Bowl went for P5 vs P5. I don't see this as a slight to Memphis in any way at all. In fact, I see this as a huge showing of respect and love for the AAC because it sends the message to the conference that improving the AAC potential is very important for landing bowls. So the Liberty Bowl is doing the AAC a huge favor by requiring them to do it the right way and build it before giving them a carrot for not putting in the effort to make changes. This is a fantastic turn of events for the AAC.

Both of my posts are serious. Read the excerpts from the Liberty Bowl and you'll see that they still have a soft spot for U of Memphis. And there in lies the issue. Deferring to the AAC simply because of U of Memphis and FedEx is not in the best interest of the school and the conference in the long term. As it stands now, the Liberty would have become a diminished bowl had it signed on with the American. The Liberty is actually trying to "save itself" for the hopes that the American will become strong enough to take over one of the sides of the bowls. It's actually a strong showing of appreciation for Memphis and the American by working hard to elevate the status of the bowl so that when the American is ready, they will have a very solid bowl to earn in the next round of negotiations - as it should be.

First off, I wanted to point out that you don't have to be afraid to type out the word "ass". See? It's fine.
Second, as a U of Memphis fan, you are doing a disservice to your city and to the facility that is so generously provided to your school for its use. The Liberty Bowl is doing a favor for the American by elevating itself in such a way that when the American is ready to take part in the bowl, it will be rewarded by associating with a more prestigious bowl.
All the rancor and hate that the American want to heap upon the Liberty Bowl will be a huge disaster for the conference since the Liberty is in reality the biggest American fans out there. But they can't associate with the American conference right now because of the issues it currently has with perception from an academic and athletic point of view. I feel extremely confident that the Liberty Bowl is a very good secret friend to the American conference. I can't go into specifics, but rest assured that I know this to be true.
