Why?
Potential.
Publicity?
Publicity for the program???

At least we're getting commits early & they're sticking w/ them for the most part vs looking for sloppy 2nds at the last minute. I view that as a positive indicator of where the program is headed.

This is football, not basketball. And it's not a committment only an offer. It means nothing. If this kid doesn't grow anymore, we rescind the offer.
USC, LSU, and Alabama, to name a few, have all done the same thing in the recent past...
I seriously doubt that our current head coach will be here six years from now so it's a moot point

Perhaps a moo point?
Yupp. Like a cow. It's moo.
Sports and recruiting have evolved into specialized entities. Many of us throughout our childhood played football, basketball, baseball, and possibly soccer, most of the time within the same year. Sure sometimes you missed a game or two because of a little overlap but you still could play most of the season. Now it seems like most sports are year around and kids are being recruited from the time they start playing a sport at a high level, from youth to college.

Basketball - regular season, park/rec, AAU/others, specialty camps, All Star events, and other tournaments

Football - summer workouts, two a days, preseason, reg. season, post season, off-season training, 7 on 7, All star events, youth camps (colleges/others), prospect camps, specialty camps

Baseball - preseason, reg. season, post season, travel teams, All Star teams, camps, specialty camps, and I am sure there is more.

Soccer - spring, summer, and fall leagues, beginner, intermediate, and advanced teams, The Elite Teams, travel teams, team camps, preseason conditioning, preseason tournaments, season , post season
It is taking a chance and also some would question the ethics of it. But I will say that sometimes a recruit will feel loyalty to the first school to offer them. So it has potential to pay off even though it is a bit of an experiment.

That, and to plant a nugget in people's minds that we're running with the big dogs. Besides, what's his GPA? What's his ACT score? Will he qualify academically? Is he college material? None of these questions can be answered, of course. Sorry, too gimmicky for my taste.
Things have gotten strange. There is an 8 year old national basketball championship for travelling teams. Seriously.

Eight. Years. Old. And teams and families spend thousands of dollars getting there.

Yeesh.
I can hardly wait until my grandson gets to the 8th grade of Oak Mountain MS and gets his offer from UAB.
I'm fairly confident that I (and others here) could have scored higher on the ACT in the 8th grade than the score many bowl subdivision "college" athletes use to get into school.
I played high school ball with a guy who was 5'10" and 170lbs, with a 4.7 forty at the age of 14.

A real man among boys.

Unfortunately for him, that's pretty much where he maxed out.

Time to remember that the ACT and SAT scores are only indicators of how well a student is LIKELY to achieve success - good grades in college - somewhat akin to the star rankings applied to high school athletes. The higher the star ranking - or test score - the more LIKELY the success of the individual involved, but there is never any GUARANTEE of said success. Ryan Leaf remains the "poster child" for how far one can fall from ranked expectations, but there are many more. There are also many who were "honorable mentioned" or less who became All American and All Pro through trying harder or being simply overlooked.
Get back with me after his junior year & we can talk.

No big whoop one way or the other.
I heard Josh Pastner say that when his friend and former Arizona great, Loren Woods had his first child, Pastner sent him a National LOI along with his baby gift. I think he was joking.

Pastner said also seriously that he doesn't recruit before whenever they are legally able to, but If there is an elementary kid in the city of Memphis that is showing promise, he knows about it.
