A funeral procession was on I-240 this morning during the middle of rush hour traffic. The motorcycle escorts were weaving across lanes to keep cars from passing and shutting off on-ramps so traffic couldn't get on.

This is the 4th funeral I've seen on the 240 loop in the past few weeks. Someone is going to get killed--- actually, someone was killed a few months ago on the interstate--- http://www.wmctv.com/story/21970786/dump...one-person

People don't understand that you don't need to pull over for a funeral on the interstate. This morning, cars were doing all number of things because so many people (including the escorts) are not familiar with the law.

All of the funeral processions I've seen on the interstate I believe are from Ford and Sons. Most of the time, there's not even a hearse. I've heard that often they will escort the family in the limo and the procession around for the entire day, to restaurants and all sorts of places.

IMO, funeral processions shouldn't receive escorts through busy parts of the city (Germantown Parkway, the interstate system, Poplar Avenue). It's not worth someone getting killed over someone who's already dead.

Rant over.

You'll run into one pretty soon and think back to this thread.
Those motorcycle escorts drive like maniacs. No reason to drive 80 MPH while weaving in and out of traffic. I confronted an escort a month or so ago about his reckless driving. He cussed me like a sailor. Nice language for a man leaving a funeral at a church.
A few years ago, after picking someone up at the airport I reached an intersection where 2 funeral processions converged. It was eerie and confusing to all, to say the least.

That said, I can't see an alternative to having an escorted funeral procession. The ones I have been involved in have been respectable, and most drivers do pull over. It's especially moving to see firefighters line up while one passes a station.

It does seem odd that there would be one at that time of day on the interstate, but during non-peak hours it is logical to go that route as there are fewer intersections and risk of accidents.
