My son (in middle school) and I are looking for a decent place for some decent pickup basketball in the vicinity of Arlington.

Do any of you know where a good place to play is?
Rucker
Heck you need to have your head checked if you're playing outdoors in this weather. LOL

.
Before I left, about 7 years ago, the courts on Mt. Moriah next to the East precinct were very active.

Still can be but it's not close to Arlington.
Most of the burbs shy away from putting up outdoor courts, they don't want to encourage groups of young African American males to congregate. The park by my grandparents house used to have a couple goals in the parking lot, I played there every day in the summers growing up. Once they got popular with the black kids it wasn't long before the city took them down.
There is an outside court at Germantown at Farmington Elementary

I'm putting forth an open call to everyone: my company is looking to partner with a worthy organization to build an all-weather multi-purpose outdoor court. One such was just built for the Boys and Girls Club of Denver. If anyone knows the major players at such an organization that you think might be interested, could you let me know via PM? Thanks.

If the participants in the games knew how to conduct themselves in a civil manner, the courts would still be up at Marquette Park in east Memphis. Fights, loud disturbing music, parking their cars in the grass instead of the street and a number of other problems forced the city to remove the goals years ago. It was a shame. I spent many hours playing there and hated to see them go.

Me too. Didn't know they were gone, what a shame.

Wow, when all that stuff happened in the park with a court across the street from my house in North Memphis, I didn't realize it was a threat. Fights occasionally happened, but I think I've seen a fight or two between suburbanites too in my day.

I was going to PM you, but I think you are igging me.

But wouldn't Streets Ministries do this kind of thing? What about a foundation of Penny Hardaway or Zach Randolph?
On Poplar. The Sprite courts near Le Bonheur.

Although it's NTR, you might get more responses on the main board. They would probably cut you some slack since it's the off season.

So fights and disruptive behavior are acceptable in your household? Kinda explains your attitude.

Yes, there are usually some good games up there.

Talking outdoor bball brings back memories of playing at Gaisman park way back when. We would run for hours.

Moved in across the street in '68 and spent many good times on those courts. The city lowered the goals to try and make them more kid friendly and the bad element still ruined it for everyone else. Numerous visits by the police, beer bottles littering the park after the games. Cars parked everywhere discouraged families from wanting to use the park. They were removed 10 years or more ago.
I still own the house and having that nice park there makes the house easy to rent.

I guess I am glad I don't live near latellion. Fighting, drunks and disruptive behavior is his favorite pastime. Hope he stays in north Memphis. I moved out of Hurts Village in '68 to get away from that and he enjoys it.

They are still running over there. Running from bullets.

Spent many summers at Gaisman playing tennis then head to the Rebel or Jerrys for some refreshments. I would imagine soccer is pretty popular over there now.

I grew up one street west of Gaisman. Know the area well. All the baseball fields at Gaisman are grown up and they took away the goals because of the crowd they attracted.

My dad was a big player in youth sports when I was growing up. We actually made the soccer goals and lined the field that used to be at Gaisman, same for Berclair.
