Some thoughts ~ Grove Grille or Jim's Place, both out east, excellent.

But for an interesting night, show him either all the great new restaurants in Cooper-Young (Sweet Grass), or Overton Square (Bari or Local). Tons of great choices both places.

Or take him downtown where you have 160 restaurants from which to choose. Don't even get me started on that!

I had dinner at Rendezvous a couple weeks ago, on a Wednesday. Honestly, it was fabulous. Everything was perfect. I don't know if I'll ever get to say that again, so I'd better stop while I'm ahead. I will say that was probably the 7th time I'd ever eaten there in my 17 years in Oxford or Memphis. 3 were as part of wedding crap.

As an aside, that recent dinner trip was with my best friend from middle school who was in town. We hadn't seen each other in almost 20 years and hadn't been in touch till he found me on Facebook a week before that. When I initially met up with him at the bar at Bleu, as he was staying at the Westin, 20 years had disappeared in 20 seconds. Of course, we later found out our wives had the exact same idea when you bring up, "I'm going to meet this guy at a hotel bar I haven't seen in 20 years and have never talked about."

Yep, pretty much a gay hookup. NTTAWWT. Apparently our wives would be BFFs as theyre both runners and apparently inexplicably question their husband's sexuality.

My boss and I are flying into Mempho for a business appointment at Fred's Dollar HQ.

We are staying at the Hilton Doubletree on Poplar and Sanderlin. Boss wants the four of us to go to the Rendezvous. At least once. We're staying from Wednesday afternoon till Thursday late afternoon. I suggested that we try Houston's. I like it, but he said he's been there and that it was a "chain."

My guess is that we'll do the Vous Wed night and I'll try to convince them on Houston's or the Half Shell Thursday. Unless I'm missing something.

I know I will probably get hammered for this but you are less than 1 mile away from Corky's BBQ on Poplar as opposed to Rendezvous. I know the Rendezvous is a Memphis landmark but as far as the ribs go they are not in the same league as Corky's. In this town where BBQ is a religion, everyone has their preference.
And just a little further east on Poplar is a seafood restaurant called Sharkey's as opposed to the Half Shell, it is about 1 mile past the I-240 expressway. But if you want to go just a bit farther east on Poplar I suggest you go to a place called Petra. It is a great Greek restaurant. Really really good. And just two blocks away from your hotel is Folk's Folly steak restaurant. Quite pricey but usually good. And at Poplar and Perkins Extended (just over a mile away from the hotel) is Jim's Place Grille. Very recommended.

Corky's is like Barbecue for Tourists ............. that don't know any better.

Cooked in electric ovens with a few wood chips.

Not even remotely my ideal for Memphis Barbecue.

Fillet, spinach casserole, twice baked, and a woodford reserve and I am a happy camper.

Is Gus' overrated in terms of being the highest rated restaurant in Memphis according to Urbanspoon? Probably, but there is a reason they are. Is it overrated in terms of what they say they are (world famous) and the quality you get compared to other on-the-bone chicken restaurants? No way, they are the best at their craft. You can't beat taking down 8 pieces of chicken and a 40oz. beer by yourself in an old POS building. Watching the cooks often allows a really entertaining free show to go along with the food. Usually amazing service, too. They need mac & cheese at the Downtown store. There is a reason they are bout to go nation wide with the franchise.

Central BBQ is hands down the best in Memphis. Great sides (best beans), the best rub, great sauce, great wings, great ribs (when fresh), the best pulled pork and bbq nachos. Fun atmosphere. Amazing service 99% of the time. Love the Tigers.

BS Report said Central and Gus' were the best they had in Memphis during WCF. That's why I think those two restaurants deserve their reputation. Also, you keep the cups (I have a whole cabinet dedicated to them), they have great shirts, and, most importantly, good prices.
I agree about Central, but just judging ribs alone and not a whole restaurant, I must say that Tops' ribs, which I have had twice now from the Union store, were just about equal to Central's, which means both were pretty much perfect Memphis ribs.

You've said that before. I'll be near the Top's in Bartlett? soon. Last time they were meh. Is it a Union thing? I'll give it another go, but expect a neg if I'm disappointed.

Like I said, BBQ in Memphis is like a religion, and we all have our preferences. If you don't care for Corky's then that's fine, but to infer the Memphis customers that like Corky's are no smarter than tourists is somewhat narrow minded. There are about a dozen BBQ places I like and find that each have something good to offer.

I like Corky's, and I'm a native. If that makes me some sort of heathen, oh well, I'll survive. But BBQ Shoppe is better. Rendevous? Gross. But if others like it, hey, more power to them.
Like all other locals, I have my preferences---beginning with my own smoked overnight out on the patio.

I'm almost tempted to use the old cliche that there is no such thing as bad BBQ

That's what I'm wondering, if it is a Union thing. Maybe I just got lucky with when I ordered them, but the second batch was even better than the first. It was fairly fatty, but the flavor was amazing and they were so tender.

You'll be close to Interim (very good), Andrew Michael (I really like it) and River Oaks (very good). Don't do a chain unless your boss wants to do one.

83msu, I agree with you on Sweet Grass.
Café Eclectic is also good, but a little different so I can see how some may not like it.
How can the Barksdale be overrated? It pretends to be nothing more than it is.
