Ben Pike wasn't going to get drafted, no matter how hard he worked. He likely wouldn't have been a full-time starter on this year's squad. By starting a full-time job immediately after earning his bachelor's degree is being a provider. A year's salary as a high school teacher and coach is much more valuable than an extra year of school (not enough time to complete a master's degree), which would mean an entire year of not earning a salary and being three states away from his sick wife.
