Drudging up this topic again. Bill Sizemore has an article in the Pilot about ODU looking to merge with EVMS. The hope is to create the first school of public health in the state. I'm not sure what the probability of this being successful is, but I know that it'd be a great boon for the University.

I hope it goes through and the two schools realize how good a full merger is for both institutions. Here's the link:

whatever happened with W & M doing this?

edit - should have read the article first. this is just for Pub Health and no a full merger. still a good idea (for ODU)
Yeah, perhaps the title should be changed--this isn't a merger, it's two independent institutions possibly working together.

However, it could be the first step down that road if W&M keep slow-playing their hand.
W&M committee says it's too soon for EVMS merger is the latest official news that I am aware of:

Wait a sec, My wife has a BS in Ophthalmic Technology from ODU/EVMS they have been in partnership since at least the early 2000s
Screw EVMS... if they want bigtime football so badly, they can go watch their stinkin-smallball FCS W&M Griffins or Tribe (whatever). They're not jumping on our bandwagon now. If they do, let's make em pay dearly for the privilege.

AIM HIGHer than EVMS!

Ok, love the enthusiasm and your obvious passion for ODU, but I think "screw EVMS" is a bit extreme. ODU needs a professional school in order to grow the reputation, perception as well as the endowment of the school. It is highly unlikely we ever get funding to start a new medical school (or dental school, pharmacy school, etc). Right now EVMS is the best bet to accomplish this imo. I've often wondered something, and would like to hear some other thoughts regarding this topic-If Dr. Runte was still running the university, do you think this would have happened by now?

Yes

I think there are some possibilities, even at this juncture.

ODU's entry into the FBS Football arena will bring a higher profile to the University, and potentially any EVMS/ODU/Public Health merger would benefit the Norfolk/Hampton Roads Community's health needs.

A merger could create dramatic regional and state interest and would bring well deserved recognition that would attract bigger donors to fund the needs of both. The Strength of this partnership would also enhance State funding and prestige for everyone. Win, win all the way around.

I'm just venting for how they snubbed us in the Medical School announcement with W&M. obviously, I'd take them back with their tail between their legs at this point so we can MED School-UP in the future. Of course, we'd have to call it the Old Dominion School of Medicine. Anyone disagree?

Period.

While there's no doubt that W&M is much more prestigious than ODU, ODU has a much larger biology department (with a PhD program that W&M don't have) and a huge number of students in health sciences.

A med school benefits ODU in many ways, but I think ODU would give EVMS researchers more scope for funding than W&M.

Let's not forget our new Biomedical Engineering program either.

ODU and EVMS is something that should of been done a long time ago. It's a no brainier for both institutions. It's just a matter of both having the right long term vision.

Not in a School of Public Health.
I really think that we (as ODU supporters) really need to push for an ODU-EVMS merger. It would definitely help ODU in many ways: larger endowment, more grants, more undergraduate research (especially bio and health related fields), better reputation, and there are a ton more benefits.

ODU has great undergrad programs, along with some darn good graduate programs but a professional school needs to be on the docket in the future (hopefully near future). We don't need a law school, pharmacy is an option (HU has one though), and we're not adding a medical school at ODU with EVMS right around the corner.

If we push Broderick and state representatives then there is absolutely no reason why ODU can't merge with EVMS! I certainly think it's important for ODU's future that we become a more nationally recognized university and having a med school only helps that goal.

I think this is a really important point, we need to make sure that this is really considered amongst the powers that be.

Medicine and health sciences could be a real niche for ODU. Both ODU and EVMS have some great research programs and when I think of medical research, nowhere in Virginia really comes to mind. It's something that the military association can really boost too. Add in a combined 7 year BS/MD program and smart kids from across the state quickly come to ODU. A merger with EVMS should be at the very top of the BOT's and President's mind.
Considering my mom is an odu alum and works for Evms and my pops was/is a professor at odu, I'll see what I can do to make this happen! Ha ha

This is exactly the correct mindset. An ODU and EVMS merger also offers many synergies while the proposed ODU and WM merger does not. I'd also say that the proposed WM merger is (and always has been) far less likely than anyone believes.
It takes a lot of money to maintain EVMS and the associated facilities. With ODU's current financial position and a likely large set of expansion projects requiring state funding coming up, I can't see the GA financially backing this. EVMS is for the most part funded through private, corporate, and Federal grant $. If ODU or for that matter W&M become tied to EVMS, State $ would have to be allocated. I really don't see that happening. I don't think ODU wants that financial burden without additional help from the GA. I believe ODU has other priorities. I do think there are many synergies and ODU should leverage those as much as possible without being financially tied together. Maybe in 5 to 10 years but not now. I would think we could establish other Health and Medical Science programs (PA, radiology, pharmacy, etc.) and leverage a partnership with a EVMS vs actually merging with EVMS.

You bring up some excellent points namely that the GA would have to back up a merger with more funding for EVMS plus actually approve the merger itself. However, I want to point out that EVMS does receive state funding (just not as much at MCV or UVA).

Here's a quote from an EVMS's website describing funding which it receives from the state:
Quote:Since its inception in 1973, the state has provided modest support for EVMS relative to Virginia’s other medical schools at the University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Currently, our MD education funding is based on a formula that provides EVMS with just one-half the funds supplied to the other two medical schools. In addition, EVMS receives education funding for only two Health Professions programs, modest financial aid and no funds for operations/maintenance received by the other medical schools.

This quote comes from this article - http://blogs.evms.edu/MissionPossible/?p=180 - and it is more than 2 years old so things might have changed, but I'm suspecting that EVMS still does receive at least some state funding.

Plus, there is no reason why those federal grants, private support, and corporate donors would not still support EVMS even if it did merge with ODU. Hopefully that type of funding would only increase!

---------

EDIT: Check out this quote from EVMS's website about their past president, Harry Lester, who left the school on April 15th of this year:

Quote:Over the past eight years, his (Lester's) leadership has resulted in:

Additional annual state funding for the school, which for the first time brings EVMS on par with the state’s educational program funding for other Virginia medical schools.

Looks like the limited state funding is no longer an issue.
