Full Version: bye bye MEM as a hub airport...

That's horrible. We've let Delta d!ck us around for years, and its gotten us absolutely nowhere.
Delta sucks. And seems to be making no effort to remedy the situation. I have had nothing but bad experiences with them over the last ten years or so. In fact, it seems at times they go out of their way to screw you over. I try to fly some other airline when I can.

FYI the three letter designation for Memphis International Airport is MEM. MIA is Miami.
hopefully someone picks up the ball, but I doubt it as I don't think Memphis gets a ton of convention business anymore, right?
I will continue to go out of my way to choose another airline than Delta. Darn, I wish Horizon and Alaska Airlines flew here!

Our Airport Authority bears some blame for this, too. Lots of cronyism there over many, many years.
Memphis Int'l is still a Hub airport...

Just not for people.

But Delta sucks.

Maybe one day, the relative lack of origination passengers will be balanced by lower ticket costs as airlines try to attract fliers.
Symptomatic of a declining economy and the hits will keep on coming.
Memphis is one of the more expensive airports to fly out of, so maybe they should consider what will it take to make the fares more competitive. In comparison the cost of living and the cost of labor in Memphis is supposedly lower compared to other cities, so why does it cost more to fly out of Memphis than many other cities by comparison? Memphis gives up fares too often to Little Rock and Nashville because of ticket prices.

Probably because the bulk of Northwest's and then Delta's passengers didn't originate here so the passengers from here were price gouged. Now that we won't be a hub, and the airport will rely on multiple airlines trying to get customers for profitable routes, the ticket prices will go down. Unfortunately the airport traffic will fall and the shops and restaurants will suffer.
i had to laugh when I saw steve cohen comment about delta having broken promises...

MEM is not one of the most expensive airports to fly in and out of, it is THE MOST expensive airport. Maybe now we can get some reasonable prices.
When Northwest was here we were told that the higher prices we paid to fly were due to the cost of being a hub and having so many direct flights and international flights. Delta came in and strategically cut most of the direct flights but kept the high prices. Now we are being de-hubbed. I really hope other carriers come into MEM to pick up the open gates left by delta. MEM's OD numbers are not great, but they are comparable to other similarly sized metro areas. An airline can be profitable flying in and out of MEM, but prices have to come down to draw more air travelers.

I said one of the more expensive as the list provided will attest. While I agree Memphis is ranked as the highest rate per average ticket, by 16 cents over Cincinnati, it is only marginally higher than the 6th place Newark, being just $6.91 higher on average. If Memphis was grossly higher than the other cities on Boyd's list then claiming we are the "MOST expensive" would have more merit.

$476.22 Memphis
$476.06 Cincinnati
$474.92 Dulles
$473.10 Huntsville
$472.76 Houston
$469.31 Newark
$449.46 Harrisburg
$443.72 Buttchuggerville
$439.86 Madison
$428.26 Cleveland
Upon further research I looked at the Bureau of Transportation and the up to date info showing the fourth quarter of 2012 shows Memphis is now in the 6th spot and Huntsville is now the #1. Here is a list showing 100 US airports.
Table 14: Ranked by 4th Quarter 2012 Average Domestic Fare (current$)

Excel | CSV

Fares are based on domestic itinerary fares. Itinerary fares consist of round-trip fares unless the customer does not purchase a return trip. In that case, the one-way fare is included. Fares are based on the total ticket value which consists of the price charged by the airlines plus any additional taxes and fees levied by an outside entity at the time of purchase. Fares include only the price paid at the time of the ticket purchase and do not include other fees paid at the airport or onboard the aircraft. Averages do not include frequent-flyer or “zero fares” or a few abnormally high reported fares.
