Thanks for the link! Had no idea he was even given an opportunity... figured he was on the radio or selling insurance.
DeMarco to play about 50% of the game tonight!!! you can listen to the game in about an hour http://www.teamradio.ca/live/music-player/index.html

Hoping firstrow gets a link up to watch the game.
Soon the 17 will be the first number looking down on Foreman Field. It's funny that some ODU fan said something stupid like, jerseys aren't retired because a player had a feel good moment. Yeah, I'm sure that's the reason why the BC Lions picked Demarco. They said awe, look at the poor kid limping into the game for a token snap. I think we should draft him because we feel sorry for him. They picked him because he's a great athlete, leader and team player.

Well said!!!
1) Demarco was signed as a Free Agent by the Lions and his tryout story was covered by the Pilot. Anyways, the CFL draft only includes Canadian born players.

2) He just threw a 14 yard Touchdown pass in a preseason game.

Sure.

1)A minor error but not really the point.

2)And thanks for minimizing his performance to just throwing a 14 yard pass in an exhibition game.. No big deal eh. Yeah, Demarco. The nerve of him trying to be the best he can be. Great job.
I love the Old Dominion being talked about on the BC radio!!!!!!!!!

No, it won't. Does anyone seriously agree with this statement?

Well...... are they? Interesting that you find a true statement stupid. In what world does a RS Senior who lost his starting job to a true freshman get his jersey retired? You know what.... I'll just link the discussion that you were referring to HERE for those interested. You had a very difficult time defending your stance.

STRAW MAN FALLACY LINK

Who has ever said that Demarco is someone to be pitied? Where are you pulling this garbage from? A belief that one doesn't deserve to have their college jersey retired is a far different opinion than a belief that someone is a sad case. Please, if you are going to force your views, do it with argumentative integrity.

In this years BCS National Championship game between Alabama and Notre Dame, there were a combined ZERO retired jerseys from both programs. Alabama has had a team since 1892. Notre Dame has had a team since 1887.

The USC Trojans football team has 6 retired jerseys. All of them are Heisman Trophy winners. They've had a team since 1888.

The Marshall Thundering Herd football team has one retired jersey. That player is also in the Professional Football Hall of Fame (Frank Gatski). Marshall has had a team since 1895.

The USM Golden Eagles football program has three retired jerseys. Brett Favre is one of them. They have had a team since 1912.

ECU has 4 retired football jerseys. Two of them were given to players who died while on the team. Their last non-posthumous jersey retirement was for a player who ended his ECU career in 1959. ECU has had a team since 1932.

Get the picture?

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of what retired jerseys are awarded for. They are awarded for ELITE ON FIELD PERFORMANCE. To say that Demarco does not fit this criteria is not a diminishment of his career at ODU. If you believe it is, then as a result of that logic, you have diminished the careers of every player that you didn't nominate as a retired jersey candidate. Understand?

There you go again throwing words in people mouths. Will you knock it off? All devyanks90 did was make a factual statement.

It's a shame that you decided to write a bait post such as this knowing full well that it would elicit a response such as this from me. This thread was intended to be 100% pro-Demarco. However, as long as you continue posting on this topic, I'll continue correcting on this topic.

A great athlete who transferred from San Diego State (as a punter), started 2.5 years for a brand new IAA team, and was beaten out by a true freshman? All this DeMarco man-love is making me uncomfortable. No way he gets retired.
I gotta say...Fatalisk with the strong points. +1.

Demarco was a great player for us and his early success helped ODU get moving faster than most schools could have done it. Thanks to him and I hope he has a long career in the CFL and I will leave it there.
Are we really atguing if DeMarco should have his jersey retired? You realize that is a once in 30 years type honor? To put thing in perspective, Heinicke hasn't even done enough.

Agree, In Baseball we have just two jerseys retired, Bud and Verlander. Now ODU Hall of Fame maybe yes.
I like the idea of a plaque or something of that sort in the new stadium with a gesture to the first team, maybe the entire first class with their names on it or something.
A plaque for the first class players who graduated, so many of the first class and didn't graduate. We almost got in trouble with the NCAA in regard to APR.

896 APR that year. That's FIU territory.
I'm certainly not up in arms about the suggestion, and I am a big fan of Thomas DeMarco, however I believe that retiring a jersey number is the single highest honor that a university can bestow upon a student athlete, and as such it should be reserved for the very few. I think that on field, measurable accomplishments such as statistics, records, championships, and post-graduate accomplishments should determine which athletes are so honored. As much as I appreciate what DeMarco achieved for ODU, and the hard work that he put forth, I also don't think that he has distinguished himself to the degree that his jersey number should be retired by ODU.

What do you mean you can't respond to me? Did you mean to say you can't respond to me with valid reasoning? How am I being babysat? Because people agree with me? Which one of my posts has ever given you the indication that I cannot "stand up for myself"? While we're on the topic of your false inferences, why did you give me a negative rep saying that I'm a "racist SOB"? Find a post of mine that shows I'm a racist. PLEASE justify this negative rating.

In what way is the retirement of one player's jersey an honor to a group? A retired jersey is an individual award. In no way would retiring Demarco's jersey reflect positively on any of the orignal members except Demarco.

(06-15-2013 01:16 PM)Sirloin Burger Wrote: [ -> ]People are awarded medals and degrees where none were earned in favor of commemorating an event.

Are you now admitting Demarco didn't earn a jersey retirement? If not, then why post this? If you have wavered on your initial stance, then again I ask, why don't you think I can defend my opinions?

(06-15-2013 01:16 PM)Sirloin Burger Wrote: [ -> ]I don't understand the negativity against this young man who led this program to the best start in FCS history.

I don't understand the big deal. Why are you all up in arms about this?

Weird really.

Again, you misinterpret the view that he doesn't deserve his jersey retired as negativity. Haven't we been over this? I'm not up in arms. I'm just responding to your posts. Nothing is weird.

(06-15-2013 01:22 PM)Sirloin Burger Wrote: [ -> ]This was indeed to be a pro Demarco thread but in another thread you decided to be a a smart-a and minimize this persons achievements down to having a feel good moment ignoring everything else. I don't think you read it last time so I'll post THIS LINK again.

I responded to this post:

With the post:

(06-06-2013 11:18 PM)Fatalisk Wrote: [ -> ]Retired jerseys are for on field performance not for feel good stories.

Explain where the minimization of his career achievements was? I was simply responding to your contention that the class he showed in being replaced would be an influencing factor in his potential jersey retirement. This is not a factor that is considered for an honor such as jersey retirement. (Not just because those who are replaced are never up for consideration anyway.) My correction of your misconception in this regard in no way minimizes his performance on the field. It isn't even the same topic.

(06-15-2013 01:22 PM)Sirloin Burger Wrote: [ -> ]Who is pro Demarco here? Definitely not you. What is your problem? Don't you want to honor this first group of players who took a leap od faith?

Yes, I'm pro Demarco. You are wrong again. No problem here. A plaque with the names of ALL of original members would be a nice honor.
This is just weird.

Either he should have his number retired or we hate him?
