Don't look now, but the baseball team is 17-29 and have lost 13 of their last 15. My goodness.
On the other hand, the softball team has a great record and had a 9-game winning streak at one point.
Many injuries, especially to pitchers(at least 2 lost for season before season began & 2 more can't pitch for the remainder of the season after last week's Samford series)...
They were expected to struggle before the injuries and with them the season has been pretty bad.
Our title was a conference tournament title, not regular season. I don't expect them to make it very far in this tournament.
We get to play in the best baseball stadium in college baseball next year. Let's look to the future.
I don't expect them to even make the tournament this year...
UAB has lost eight straight games to Samford. Ugh!
It sure was exciting last season when they won the conference tournament in Mississippi. I even bought a t-shirt commemorating the championship.
UAB as a team has hit only 8 home runs this year.
Samford has hit 48 home runs with 4 individuals with at least 8 or more homers.
Samford has scored about twice as many runs this year compared to UAB.
UAB has not hit the ball all year long. It's difficult to win college baseball games with this offensive attack.
McGrath for the softball team has hit at least 9 home runs.
Is it time for a change? I seem to remember a lot of excitement for Shoop but he hasn't delivered for the most part.
I would say nope.
With the new park next year & with the way he runs the program he has about 3 years before we should even consider any changes.
The time for the AD to review the season results and discuss with a coach the background reasons for problems is after the season. Lack of run support, particularly in the category of home runs, is something to discuss. As we have seen in FB, outscoring another team can be difficult when your offense is not performing or the defense can't be depended upon. Baseball works the same way. In a sport with limited scholarships and a university with limited funding for "other sports", it may be that we are doing as well as we realistically can. Does our recruiting picture look promising? Are we getting the players the coach WANTS or are we getting the players he has to settle for? These are among the things on that discussion list.
Regarding injuries, my father always said one or two was coincidence. When you have a rash of them, that's bad conditioning and likely questionable coaching.
We have fired one coach a year after a conference championship. Why not another?
UAB has just beaten the #18 team from Rice 10-9.

What a funny game!
No matter how bad we are, we always beat Rice.
In college baseball, that's saying something.
I tend to think Shoop should be given some time to use Regions Field as a recruiting tool. I don't know enough to have anything to say about the S&C program for baseball, but I think it makes sense to look at it.
