I was reading thru the media stuff and trying to figure it out. Ecu would be cool but uab has history. Wood talks utsa rivalry in all the press stuff. Marshall will be good. I think for football marshall in conference and ill take utsa for out of conference. Basket ball florida schools and uab. But at the liberty tax classic utsa came off the court shoving our team in the hallway. Utep for basketball could be goo if we give them a run for the title.

Tell what you think and why? While it isn't going to be close for any of these, we have to start building up to rivalry and creating new ones. Like florida we hate all other florida schools but fsu and um are the best. Um because we only play them like once every 4 years. We used to play it in tampa because it was so big. I would love to see odu and uab played in atlanta because its neutral and a huge game. That would be cool.
UNCC - Similiar schools, upstart football, little bit of shared history and shared geography...
Depends on performance.
Charlotte in my opinion.

It won't be ECU. Remember they are leaving the conference. UTSA is in our conference, I think you meant division. Either way, I'll take Charlotte. It just makes too much sense for it not to be Charlotte.

Charlotte is a natural rival, but if we transition well to FBS and they suck for the foreseeable future, there won't be a fierce rivalry, at least not in football. I see Marshall and WKU as more likely for now, but Charlotte could develop over time.
FIU may be interesting in Basketball. They should be good and Anthony Evans will likely have something extra for us each time out. Don't be shocked if he starts recruiting 757.

Possibly, but sweet baby Jesus their new court is ugly. In case you missed it, behold:

It has the atlantic ocean threatening one side, vegetation growing on the other and a aggressive looking panther at center court. Very strange combination.
I think Charlotte, if not them than Marshall in Football and UAB in basketball.

Is that a practice gym or their real basketball venue?

Also, a panther that hangs out in the sea, a "sea panther", has just bumped sharks off the top of my things in the ocean that scare me list.
Real Gym, Richard Pitino signed off on the idea and then immediately skipped town. Talk about a walkoff: http://odubleedblue.com/fiu-did-what-to-their-floor/

I've got a little more than SBNation on that link, including some Richard Pitino stuff.
Pull out bleachers, hot. I can't knock it too much because I might be able to make a great excuse to stay with some friends and go to a game. =] Cheap vacation with the family.
I could see some rules coming into play if this turns into a fad and gets out of hand. What a distraction to the refs and seeing the lines and such.
Especially if the NCAA considers it to be an advantage, especially for non conference games. If I'm Florida, FSU or Miami I wouldn't go there.

FIU knows the floor because they practice on it, I can see how it could be awkward for an opponent.
30 sec timeout discussion:

"What do we run coach?"
"You, set a pick for him at the waterline, watch out for the rip."
"You cut hard and look to toss the coconut to so and so waiting at the palm tree."
I think for bball our main rivals will be Charlotte, UAB, and Marshall. We have some history with the Niners and Blazers, and the Herd are fairly close. In fball it's tougher to speculate because of course there is no history there. I would guess Charlott and Marshall there.

There will probably be a decent rivalry or two that spring up just from competition in meaningful games. These types of rivalries necessitate a high level of play from both teams so I would hope UTEP in bball and USM in both bball and fball.

@Cr8n, that is FIU's arena. I believe it seats around 5K, so it's "cozy."
I think our rivals in the first few years will be different from our rivals that develop over time. Rivals aren't created in the head or on a map, though proximity does add something to it. There is a reason W&M was never a rival to us and before VCU was any good our main CAA rival was probably Wilmington and JMU before that.

Something will happen on the court and football field that turns a conference opponent into a rival. There will be some bad blood, obnoxious players/coaches/fans, or a big upset that makes a yearly matchup more emotional. Or (hopefully) there will be a a team in each sport that we routinely are fighting for championships with, and a rivalry will develop out of competition.

For now it feels a little weird because there is no team in the conference that I hate. I despised half the teams in the CAA.

I agree, familiarity breeds contempt.

That said, I do hope Charlotte becomes our rival.
I can see Charlotte developing into a rivalry in both football and basketball. We are in the same division, and due to proximity, we will likely see significant travel for games in both directions that will generate fan interaction on top of the division competition. Looks ready made for a rivalry to me.
