It's time for a Monarch football fix. The scrimmage at Foreman Field today at 1:00pm is open to the public. I understand the defense is looking good. Hope to see you all there.

I'm here, we have a surprisingly good turnout I think
Anybody have any insight on how the scrimmage went? How did David Washington look?
In my opinion, Washington is the obvious #2. Him and McElroy got the most time today. Washington is definitely a very good runner, but he needs to work on his pocket presence as he got sacked a few times. Had a great half-the-field hail mary near the end of the game. I kinda hope McElroy had a bad game, as I wasn't that impressed with him. He had a few cool plays though, where he faked out a defender. Refs called him down but I thought he scuttled away in time.

Defense really showed up today as well. There were at least 2 interceptions, and tackling is much better as far as I can see. There was an especially nasty tackle nearing the end of the game. The ball kept moving while Heinicke was on the field, but the defense stopped both Washington or McElroy from moving it much.
Heinicke did look pretty sharp, but he threw one really bad pick. Not sure what happened, but it seemed that Heinicke and the receiver were not on the same page.

Several kickers got looks. There was one 54 yard field goal made with the wind. Sorry to say I am not sure who kicked it, but I think it was Brown. There were too many misses - - almost all wide left.

Overall the receivers looked very sharp. Almost every ball they could get to they caught.

The running game was not real impressive, with the defense looking pretty strong against the run. There was some pretty impressive hitting going on. More than once you could hear some pretty violent sounding collisions.

All in all, it was good to see some Monarch football despite the fact that the two "CAA" logos are still on the field.

Monarchs have another scrimmage tomorrow. Can't make it because of work. I can't wait to read all about it from you guys and from Harry.
Wrapping up looks a lot better even from a few videos.
Today's scrimmage (4/13) reinforced my impressions from last week that the defensive line is ahead of the offensive line to this point. Early on what I saw was a defensive front that for the most part dominated the offensive front five, and the hitting was solid, forcing at least one interception after Heinicke put the ball on target. A number of blitz packages were successful in forcing sacks. I was particularly impressed with a defensive end wearing number 96 who I took to be Scott Wiggins. I have no doubt that he will see a lot of playing time this year.

As the scrimmage progressed, the offense began to click a little bit better. Heinicke looked good in a couple of red zone situations. I commented last week that the receivers looked sharp with no dropped balls. That did not hold true today as there were at least three to four balls just plain dropped when they clearly should have been caught.

If what you are hoping for is an improved defense, it looks to me like we are getting one. I just want to see the offense come on strong in the spring game next week.

I definitely agree that the O-line needs a little more time to gel. I was also impressed with the running backs particularly #32. Hard runner and made some very good reads. I believe that was C.J. Bradshaw but I'm not sure.

I guess it was CJ. It's nice to see him get some credit for his recent play.
